Sergei Walentinowitsch Pogorelow ( Russian Серге́й Валенти́нович Погоре́лов ; born June 2, 1974 in Volgograd ; † April 24, 2019 ) was a Russian handball player .
Club career
Pogorelow moved in 1999 from the Russian club GK Kaustik Volgograd to the German handball league , where he first played at TBV Lemgo and then at ThSV Eisenach . From there he went in 2001 to the Spanish league ASOBAL for BM Ciudad Real , with whom he won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 2002. During the 2002/03 season, the 1.97 meter tall back player was loaned to the French club Villeurbanne, for whom he threw 40 goals in 12 games. In the following season he was loaned to Paris Handball . After Pogorelow returned to Ciudad Real and received no match practice there, he was loaned to the Spanish first division club BM Altea in October 2004 . In the summer of 2005 he joined Algeciras BM . For the 2008/09 season Pogorelow moved to the Macedonian club RK Metalurg Skopje , which he left after only a week after he failed the health check.
National team
Sergei Pogorelow played 194 international matches for the Russian national team . With Russia, he became 1996 European champion , 1997 world champion and won at the Olympics in 2000 , the Gold Medal and 2004 bronze.
At the European Championships in 1998 Pogorelow was elected to the all-star team.
