The 3rd European men's handball championship was held in Italy from May 29th to June 7th, 1998 . The title was won by the Swedish national handball team , which defeated Spain in the final . The German selection took third place, Austria and Switzerland could not qualify for the European Championship finals.

In the preliminary round, the twelve qualified teams played in two groups of six teams each. Within a group, each team competed once against each other team. The two best teams in each group qualified for the semi-finals.
