European handball championship 1998 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 3rd Men's Handball European Championship 1998 . 28 nations were involved in the qualification, of which 10 teams qualified for the finals in Bolzano and Merano . Only Spain, as defending champions of the European Championship in 1996 and Italy, as the host of the European Championship in 1998, were directly qualified.

Pre-qualification

The worst-placed 18 teams in the ranking had to compete in the pre-qualification in five groups - three groups of four teams and two groups of three teams. The group winners were allowed to start in the qualification.

qualification

The five group winners of the pre-qualification were added to the 15 teams qualified for the qualifying round. These determined the participants in the final round of the 1998 European Championship in five groups of four teams each. The first two of all groups were qualified.
