This page describes the qualification for the 3rd Men's Handball European Championship 1998 . 28 nations were involved in the qualification, of which 10 teams qualified for the finals in Bolzano and Merano . Only Spain, as defending champions of the European Championship in 1996 and Italy, as the host of the European Championship in 1998, were directly qualified.

Pre-qualification
The worst-placed 18 teams in the ranking had to compete in the pre-qualification in five groups - three groups of four teams and two groups of three teams. The group winners were allowed to start in the qualification.
