European handball championship 1994 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 1st Men's Handball European Championship in 1994 . 34 nations were involved in the qualification, of which 11 teams qualified for the finals in Porto and Almada . Only Portugal, as the host of the European Championship in 1994, qualified directly for the finals.

Pre-qualification

For the pre-qualification, the 34 participating teams were divided into seven groups, where the group winners were determined according to the championship system. The seven group winners and the best runner-up in the group qualified directly for the finals. The remaining runners-up in the group could qualify for the knockout games.

Knockout games

For the knockout games , the teams placed second in the group stage were qualified in the second qualifying phase. Only the best runner-up in the group stage was eligible to compete in the final round of the European Championship. The remaining six teams were drawn in three knockout pairings. The winners of these duels were also entitled to start in the final round.
