Nykøbing Falster is a port city in Denmark and is located on the west coast of Falster . The city forms its own parish municipality ( Danish: Sogn ) Nykøbing Falster Sogn , which belonged to Harde Falsters Sønder Herred in what was then Maribo Amt until 1970 , then to Nykøbing Falster Kommune in what was then Storstrøms Amt , the latter of which was the administrative seat of the city. As part of the local government reform on January 1, 2007 , the municipality was absorbed into Guldborgsund Municipality in the Sjælland region, whose administrative seat is in turn Nykøbing Falster.
name of the city
The origin of the place name "Nykøbing" goes back to the 13th century. Already in 1200 the town received market rights, but unlike older cities like Ribe or Viborg came Nykøbing only 1,560 new (ny) to the group of cities with market rights (Købstad) added. The appendix "Falster" is used to distinguish two other Danish cities of the same name, Nykøbing Mors and Nykøbing Sjælland . In written form, the name of the city is often given as “Nykøbing F”.

The city is known for its sugar factory. Agricultural trade and the machine and leather industries are also economically important .
traffic
At Nykøbing, Kong Frederik d. IX's Bro ( German : König-Frederik-d.-IX.-Brücke ), a bascule bridge for rail and road traffic over the Guldborgsund from Falster to Lolland . It is 295 m long and 33 m wide and was opened in 1963. It connects the city with the Sundby on Lolland . It is named after King Frederik IX. (1899-1972).
The Ringsted – Rødby Færge railway , which runs via Nykøbing, is part of the Vogelfluglinie . There is also the Lollandsbahn , which leads from here to Nakskov and opens up parts of the Lolland municipality . Ferry Port Gedser in 2009 abandoned leads railway line of the Danish State Railways .
The European route 55 runs through Nykøbing and the European route 47 runs about 10 km north of the city, which crosses the Guldborgsund in the Guldborgsund tunnel.
There are also numerous long-distance cycle routes through the city, including the Berlin-Copenhagen cycle route and the European EuroVelo route 7.
Attractions
- In the city there are worth seeing half-timbered houses from the 16th to 18th centuries. The so-called Tsar's House ( Czarens Hus ) has served as an inn since 1697; Tsar Peter the Great dined here during his stay at Nykøbing Castle in 1716.
- The water tower from 1908 is 43 meters high and has a viewing platform 32 meters high.
- Nykøbing Castle from the 15th century is only preserved as a ruin.
- The Klosterkirken is a Gothic church from the 15th century. It was built in 1419 at the instigation of King Erik VII as a church for the Franciscan monastery there, which belonged to the Dacia order and existed until 1532, when it was dissolved as a result of the Reformation . The church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary , St. Michael and St. Consecrated Francis .
- The Middle Ages -Park Middelaldercentret in the district of Sundby on the island of Lolland is a museum of living history (since 1989 Living History ). It shows a medieval village and other interesting things on an open-air site. Activities of the time are also shown, such as knight tournaments or handicrafts from the late 14th century. Closed in the winter months.
- Guldborgsund Zoo and Botanical Garden is located on the eastern edge of the city .
