The Sjælland region ( German Region Zealand) in Denmark comprises a large part of the island of Sjælland and the islands of Lolland , Falster and Møn . The administrative seat is in Sorø .

The regions were created in 2007 by the Danish Parliament. With the simultaneous dissolution of the previous districts (Danish amtskommune ), they form the middle level between the municipalities and the state central administration ( states ).

Geographically, Region Sjælland covers the former districts of Vestsjællands Amt , Storstrøms Amt and Roskilde Amt .

Official statistics differentiate between two parts of the region ( Landsdele ): Landsdel Østsjælland and Landsdel Vest- og Sydsjælland .

Regional Council

The current legislative period began on January 1, 2018. The Social Democrat Heino Knudsen has been the chairman since 2018 . The 41 mandates were distributed as follows:

When compared with the gross domestic product of the European Union, expressed in purchasing power standards , the region achieved an index of 87 (EU-25: 100) in 2015, significantly lower than the Danish average of 127 and the only region in the country below the EU average. Overall, a GDP of 27.1 billion euros was generated.

In 2017 the unemployment rate was 5.4%.
