The autobiographical work deals with the family history of Romers as the son of a Dane and a German. According to Romers, he and his mother suffered severe anti-German reactions ( Tyskerhad , German: German hatred ) in post-war Denmark in the 1960s and 1970s . Romer's statements, including real names, led to a public dispute in Denmark about the historical truthfulness of the novel, which was contested by contemporary witnesses from the family's environment.

The novel met with particular interest in Germany because Romer also describes his mother's previous love affair with Horst Heilmann , a member of the Rote Kapelle resistance group who was executed in 1942 .
