The Ringsted – Rødby Færge railway is a partly single-track main line in Denmark . It is also known as Sydbanen and is part of the Vogelfluglinie , which connects Germany with Denmark.

history

Railway construction in the 19th century

Storstrømsbroen

On October 4, 1870, the railway line from Roskilde , where it branches off the København – Fredericia railway line, to Masnedsund on Storstrømmen was put into operation. In contrast to the current connection, this route led via Køge to Næstved (→ Roskilde – Næstved railway ). Two years later, on August 22, 1872, the first railway line was opened on the island of Falster from Orehoved on the other side of the Storstrømmen to Nykøbing Falster . From 1873 there was a mail steamer connection to Rostock from Nykøbing . The rail link between Masnedsund and Orehoved was established on January 15, 1884, when a railway ferry was installed.

The railway line to Nakskov was built from Nykøbing in 1874 . In 1886 the line from Nykøbing to Gedser was opened, where the end point of the mail steamer line was also laid. Since the railway ferry Warnemünde – Gedser was put into operation in 1903 , international long-distance traffic has also come to the Sydbanen.

On January 1, 1893, the Roskilde – Nykøbing railway line was nationalized and the Danske Statsbaner integrated.

The first half of the 20th century

On June 1, 1924, the Ringsted – Næstved section was put into operation. This route branches off from the Copenhagen – Fredericia railway at Ringsted. Long-distance traffic was thus also transferred to this section, while the old line between Roskilde and Næstved was used for local traffic.

The opening of the storstrøm bridge on 26 September 1937 after four years of construction the old ferry was abandoned and the travel time will be shortened.

The construction of the bird flight line

As early as 1940 there were plans in Germany and Denmark to build a connection between the two countries with a ferry connection between Rødby on the Danish island of Lolland and Puttgarden on the German island of Fehmarn . Compared to the previous Gedser – Warnemünde ferry connection, this would significantly shorten the ferry route and also create a better connection to Northern Germany, compared to the connection via the Great Belt a significantly shorter overall route. On January 3, 1941, a corresponding law was passed by the Danish Reichstag . On April 8th of that year there was an intergovernmental agreement between Denmark and Germany regarding the construction of this connection. However, the Second World War prevented major construction work.

After the end of the war and the division of Germany, this route was interesting again because the Gedser – Warnemünde connection had belonged to the sphere of influence of the Deutsche Reichsbahn since 1949 . Therefore, in 1951, the establishment of a train ferry from Great Brode to Gedser between Denmark and the Federal Republic of Germany was decided as a temporary solution. With the construction of new ferries, many international long-distance trains between Germany and Scandinavia were soon led over this connection and over the Sydbane. This included the Italy-Scandinavia Express with through coaches from Rome to Stockholm .

Since the ferry connection via Gedser quickly reached its capacity limit, the State Treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany and Denmark was signed on June 13, 1958 to build the bird flight line. Due to the significantly shorter ferry route, more ship courses per day were possible with the same number of ships. On May 14, 1963, the Vogelfluglinie was opened and with it the route Nykøbing – Rødby Færge. In Rødby Færge, a ferry port with two ferry beds was built. As a result, the line became one of the most important connections between northern Germany and southern Scandinavia.

Restructuring from 1997

With the opening of the Great Belt Bridge , all freight traffic was transferred from the Vogelfluglinie to the new connection. At the same time, the ferry service between Puttgarden and Rødby was restructured. New double-ended ferries were procured that were only equipped with one track for transporting rail vehicles. This involved the conversion of passenger transport to the use of multiple units of the MF series from DSB.

In 2009 and 2010 the route was improved with new rails. The top speed between Ringsted and Vordingborg has been 160 km / h since then. It is planned to double-track the section between Orehoved and Rødby Færge in connection with the construction of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel . In addition, the entire route is to be electrified.

A large part of the tracks in Rødby have been closed since 1997. The crossing stations Lolland Nord, Lolland Midt and Lolland Süd were removed from the official route map in 2016. The signals were broken down; the crossing tracks are cordoned off.

In 2011 it was found that Storstrømsbro was in need of renovation. Instead of the original plan to keep this bridge as a single-track section, a new combined bridge was designed for two tracks and road traffic. Construction is expected to be completed by 2023.

In 2014, the renewal of 18 bridges began. The platforms in Vordingborg and Rødby Færge have been renewed. In 2016 construction work began on the new Masnedsundbroen . The line is to be electrified between 2022 and 2024.

The section between Vordingborg and Nykøbing will be expanded to two tracks. In the south of Eskilstrup, line improvements will be made east of the previous route and curves will be straightened. The train station in Eskilstrup is getting a new second platform.

A wooden platform was built in Orehoved, which served as a transfer point between train and rail replacement services during the construction phase from 2015 to September 15, 2019 . The route between Næstved and Ringsted will be completely closed to construction work between March 28 and November 29, 2020.

Construction work in connection with the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link

Time schedule

  • The line between Ringsted and Nykøbing Falster will be expanded to double-track by 2021 and equipped with a new signaling system.
  • With the completion of Storstrømsbroen, the line will be electrified. All work should be completed by 2024 at the latest.Template: future / in 4 years
  • The construction work between Nykøbing Falster and Holeby is being carried out in such a way that it is adapted to the opening of the future fixed tunnel connection across the Fehmarnbelt. Regional trains run every hour between Copenhagen ( Østerport station ) and Nykøbing F via Ringsted, stopping at all stations. In addition, there were five to six international train pairs from Copenhagen to Hamburg by December 14, 2019, which were hauled to Puttgarden in Rødby Færge. These were supplemented with fast regional trains between Copenhagen and Nykøbing, so that the main part of the route had two train connections an hour Monday to Friday. The Hamburg – Copenhagen trains have been running over the Great Belt since December 2019 , so that until the construction-related cessation of traffic on March 27, 2020, only regional trains will run on the route. There are only five pairs of trains left between Rødby Færge and Nykøbing. Rødby Færge will no longer be used after the construction work has been completed and will be shut down. For this purpose, a new Lolland Syd station is being built between Holeby and Rødby.

Of the international trains, four pairs of trains were driven as ICE with railcars of the 605 series of the DB AG, one or two trains (seasonal) as EuroCity with railcars of the MF series of the DSB. These trains stopped in Vordingborg, Næstved, Nykøbing and Rødby Færge, but not in Ringsted. The use of the 605 series on this connection was ended in December 2016 with the exception of one pair of trains and completely from October 1, 2017.
