Masnedsundbroen (also Masnedøbroen , German the Masnedsund Bridge ) is a 201 meter long bridge that connects the Danish islands of Sjælland ( German Zealand ) and Masnedø . From Masnedø the connection continues via Storstrømsbroen to Falster .
The structure, built between 1933 and 1937, is a combined rail and road bridge. It crosses the two-lane secondary route 153, the Ringsted – Rødby Færge railway line with one lane, a cycle path and a footpath . The bridge is located in Vordingborg municipality , Sjælland region ; at the time of its establishment the area was in Præstø Amt .
history
The first bridge over Masnedsund was opened in 1884. It was a 182-meter-long pure railway bridge that was designed as a swing bridge . There was a train ferry from Masnedo to Orehoved on Falster.
In 1931 it was decided to replace the bridge as part of the fixed Storstrøm crossing with a new, combined road and rail bridge. On May 13, 1933, the contract between Danske Statsbaner (DSB) and the English company Dorman Long was signed. The Danish company Christiani & Nielsen was hired as a subcontractor for the foundations and the concrete work on the superstructure . Construction work began that same year. On December 12, 1935, an English steamship rammed the old bridge and the northern part of the lattice structure crashed into the sound. The railway section of the new bridge was completed and train traffic resumed within just ten days. The bridge was officially opened to traffic on August 6, 1937. The old bridge was demolished.
future
In the course of the fixed Fehmarnbelt crossing , the railway line is to be expanded to two lanes. Since an extension of the bridge is not possible, the construction of a new bridge over the Storstrøm is planned, which should also be usable for pedestrians and cyclists.
As part of the modernization of the railway line between Ringsted and Fehmarn , the bridge was closed to all traffic on July 15, 2016 at midnight. This means that ships with a height of over five meters can no longer call at Sydhavn in Vordingborg via Masnedsund.
Banedanmark has built a fairway between Kalvestrømmen and Færgestrømmen to replace it. The fairway has a width of 45 meters, a water depth of five meters and your length of around 1,300 meters. At the northern end of the fairway there is a deeper turning area with a diameter of 400 meters.
