history

The company was founded in 1875 as Dorman Long & Co. Ltd. Founded in Middlesbrough when Arthur Dorman and Albert de Lande Long acquired the West March Iron Works , a manufacturer of iron profiles and sheets for shipbuilding and civil engineering . From 1880 the company produced steel using the Thomas Gilchrist process . After expanding production and taking over various other companies, Dorman Long was one of the largest British steel companies in 1914 with blast furnaces and rolling mills in which around 20,000 employees produced steel and practically all types of profiles, sheet metal and wire.

In the early 1920s, business activities were expanded to include bridge construction. The construction of the Sydney Harbor Bridge from 1923 to 1932 was the first of a series of large bridge construction projects.

The company was nationalized for the first time in 1951, but privatized again in 1954. In 1967 it was nationalized for the second time and incorporated into British Steel . During the decline of steel production in the UK, the company increasingly focused on building bridges and other large structures .

The engineering part of this business in 1982 as Redpath Dorman Long to the conglomerate Trafalgar House sold the him in 1990 with its longtime rivals bridge Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co. to Cleveland Structural Engineering merged . After Trafalgar House was taken over in 1996 by the Norwegian group Kværner ASA , the company was renamed Kvaerner Cleveland Bridge . When the bridge construction company became independent in 2000 through a management buyout , the engineering part was established as Dorman Long Technologies together with another engineering office and a manufacturer of heavy-duty cranes .
