Sukkur ( Urdu : سکھر, Sindhi : سکر) is the third largest city in the Pakistani province of Sindh . It is located on the western bank of the Indus in the Sukkur district. The city has about 500,000 inhabitants.

Geography and climate

Located 67 meters above sea level, Sukkur covers an area of 5156 square kilometers and extends from 27 ° 05 'to 28 ° 02' north and from 68 ° 47 'to 69 ° 43' east.

The district of Sukkur borders in the north on the districts Shikarpur and Kashmore , in the northwest on Ghotki , in the south on Khairpur and also on the district Jaisalmer in the Indian state of Rajasthan . Main roads connect Sukkur with cities in Pakistan and India.

The city of Sukkur is connected by the Lansdowne Bridge and the Ayub Bridge to Rohri , which is on the other bank of the Indus .

The Indus is dammed here by the huge Sukkur Barrage , whose water feeds a series of wide and long irrigation canals. Sukkur is surrounded by large palm groves, which - as it is said - are due to the soldiers of Muhammad ibn al-Qasim camped on the outskirts . These are said to have spat out date kernels everywhere.

In the architecturally interesting old town there are many mausoleums of saints and other celebrities .
