British Steel was a large British steel manufacturer that was formed by Harold Wilson in 1967 during the Labor government (1964 to 1970) from 14 nationalized private companies and had many different, widely spaced production sites, for example in Newport , Birmingham , Rotherham , Corby and in Scotland .

British Steel was re- privatized in 1988 by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government . The company merged with the Dutch Koninklijke Hoogovens on October 6, 1999 to form the Corus Group .

In 2007 Corus was taken over by the Indian steel company Tata Steel .

Start-up

The steel mill in Scunthorpe and a railroad factory in Hayange were bought by Greybull Capital and since 2016, under the management of Roland Junck, have formed British Steel Limited , which is not a direct successor to the company described here. On May 22, 2019, the start-up filed for bankruptcy. In addition to around 5,000 direct employees, around 20,000 jobs at supplier companies were also affected.
