Scunthorpe is a town in the English county of Lincolnshire . It has been the administrative seat of the Unitary Authority North Lincolnshire since 1996 . It had previously been part of the now defunct Humberside County since 1974 . The industrial city is the largest steel production center in the UK and is therefore also known as the 'Industrial Garden Town'. After Grimsby and Lincoln , it is the third largest city in Lincolnshire with 82,334 inhabitants (as of 2016).

geography

Scunthorpe is on a cliff of rugged land (the "Lincoln Cliff"), at the lower end of which the River Trent flows past. The surrounding area consists of flat hills and wide plains. Although the city itself has a very industrial character, it is surrounded by fertile farmland as well as wooded areas. The town is about a mile east of the Trent, eight miles south of the Humber, and 15 miles west of the Lincolnshire Wolds . The nearest towns are Kingston upon Hull (18 miles northeast), Doncaster (20 miles west), Grimsby (22 miles east), Lincoln (25 miles south) and Sheffield (38 miles west).

history

The city is mentioned as Escumetorp in the Domesday Book in 1086 . This is Old Norse for “Skuma's homestead”, a square that was believed to be downtown near the market.

Scunthorpe originally consisted of five small villages. These were Scunthorpe, Frodingham, Crosby, Brumby and Ashby. They later merged to form what is now the city of Scunthorpe. Below the city are rich layers of iron ore and limestone - important elements in the manufacture of steel. In 1981 it was decided to shut down all mines and quarries and to import the iron ore, as mining your own deposits was no longer profitable due to insufficient iron content in the ore. This was done in unison with all the other iron ore mines in the UK.

industrialization

Steel mills in Scunthorpe

Iron ore was mined in the area as early as the times of Roman occupation in ancient times. After that, it was forgotten for centuries and wasn't rediscovered until 1859 by industrialist Rowland Winn . This led to a flourishing of the iron and steel industry as well as high population growth in the city and the surrounding area.

In modern times, iron ore was first mined in July 1860. In the absence of a railroad connection, the ore was initially transported by carts, later by a narrow-gauge railway to Gunness on the banks of the Trent and distributed here on barges. Finally, at the instigation of Winn, a railway line was built from Keadby to the east via Scunthorpe to Barnetby , in order to be able to transport the ore more quickly. Construction of the line began in 1860 and was completed four years later. Winn also ensured that a steel mill was built near Scunthorpe near the iron ore mines. In 1862, the construction of the first steelworks began with the Trent Ironworks , which was finally put into operation on March 26, 1864. Another four steelworks were built and put into operation over the next twelve years. The last steelworks finally opened in 1912.

Three streets in Scunthorpe were named in honor of Rowland Winn: Rowland Road , Winn Street and Oswald Road .

Great damage in parts of the city was caused by the Flixborough disaster on June 1, 1974, killing 28 people.

Scunthorpe was on February 27, 2008 near the epicenter of the most violent tremors in the United Kingdom since 1984. The earthquake, which originated at 12:56 GMT at 15.4 km depth, lasted ten seconds and shook with a magnitude of 5.2 large parts of Lincolnshire on the Richter scale .

Humberside County 1974-1996

Scunthorpe is a city without its own administration within the Unitary Authority of North Lincolnshire . The city represents six of the 17 boroughs. These are Ashby, Brumby, Crosby & Park, Frodingham, Kingsway and Town. A total of 16 of the borough's 43 MPs are elected by the districts of Scunthorpes. These 16 MPs (called Charter Trustes ), who have all been appointed by the Labor Party since 2008 , in turn elect a mayor for their city.

The North Lincolnshire Government is based at Pittwood House on Ashby Road . The administrative office opened in 1963 and was the seat of the Scunthorpe Borough Council until 1996. The building was named after Edwin Pittwood, a Labor politician from the region. Additional premises are located in Church Square House near the market square.

North Lincolnshire Government Buildings

Was the area to historic times still a part of the county of Lincolnshire , she was from 1889 to 1974 part of the county Lindsey . Scunthorpe received its own municipal borough within the county as early as 1936.

When the new county of Humberside was established in 1974 , the city got a borough with the same boundaries as the old Municipal Borough. With the opening of the Humber Bridge on June 24, 1981, a permanent link was created between the southern and northern parts of the county. However, they could not secure their future, because on April 1, 1996 the county was dissolved together with its council. It in turn was followed by four Unitary Authorities , one of which is North Lincolnshire .

coat of arms

In 1936, when the city received its own borough, the College of Arms gave it a coat of arms for the first time. This coat of arms was transferred to the new borough in 1974 and is now used by the city's '' Charter Trustees ''.

The green sign and the golden sheaf of wheat indicate that the area used to be dominated by agriculture. There is a piece of chain in the middle of the shield. It points to the once five united villages of Crosby, Scunthorpe, Frodingham, Brumby and Ashby. At the top of the shield are two fossils of the species Gryphoea incurva . These oyster fossils were discovered in rock layers from which iron ore was mined. At the top of the coat of arms you can see a furnace, which refers to the slogan " Refulget labores nostros coelo " or " The heavens reflect our labor ".
