history

A grandstand in Glanford Park

Glanford Park in Scunthorpe, an English town in North Lincolnshire , was built in 1988. In the same year, on August 14, 1988, it was opened by Princess Alexandra, Lady Ogilvy and ceremoniously handed over to Scunthorpe United, the new owner of the stadium. Since then it has served this club as a venue for home games. Scunthorpe United had previously played at the Old Show Ground . The first league game two weeks later on August 27, Scunthorpe won 3-1 against Hereford United . Scunthorpe United currently plays in the third English division, the EFL League One , after the club finished 24th in the last season ( 2010/11 ) and thus had to go into the third division.

Glanford Park can seat 9,088 spectators (including 83 VIP seats), although the stadium has never been sold out. The covered grandstands of the venue offer 6,327 seats and 2,678 standing places. 19 jobs are reserved for journalists. Most of the spectators came on October 20, 2009, when former English champions Newcastle United made a guest appearance in Scunthorpe as part of a second division match. 8,921 spectators saw the home team's 2-1 victory over the later promoted team.

Grandstands

The playing area is enclosed by 4 grandstands , three grandstands are equipped with seats, only the Britcon stand is a standing grandstand:

  • Clugston Stand - Main Stand , East, Seating
  • Scunthorpe Telegraph Stand - Opposite Stand , West, Seating, Family Stand
  • Britcon Stand - back gate, north, standing room
  • South Stand - back gate, south, guest area, seating

New building plans

Scunthorpe United's home game at Glanford Park. The grandstands are not fully occupied.

At the 2013 annual general meeting, club chairman Peter Swann announced plans to build a new stadium. The new venue will have 12,000 seats with the possibility of expanding to 18,000 seats. The budget for the new building is expected to be around £ 17 to 18 million . Construction is expected to start in mid-2017, so that Scunthorpe United's home games will take place in the new stadium in the 2018/19 season. The Buckingham Group, which has already built the Amex Stadum for Brighton & Hove Albion and the MK Stadium for the Milton Keynes Dons , received the contract to build the stadium . Glanford Park, among other things, is to be sold to finance the new arena.
