history
After the building permit was granted in March 2006, construction began in July 2007 and within a year the construction was completed by the construction company Barr Construction . It replaced Layer Road Stadium , where the club had played since 1937. Colchester United and Athletic Bilbao played their first game in the new stadium on August 4, 2008; the game ended with a 1: 2 defeat for the home side. The stadium holds a total of 10,083 spectators. The attendance record dates back to January 16, 2010 when Colchester United faced Norwich City (0-5) in Football League One . The stadium was filled with 10,064 visitors. There are 700 parking spaces available for visitors around the building.
The stadium has four covered grandstands. The main grandstand in the west is the largest tier of the sports facility and on it are u. a. 24 VIP - boxes , the press box, disabled parking, the club office, ticket office and the club shop housed. In the boxes, together with the Layer Suite and the Centennial Suite , up to 400 meals can be served on match days. Part of the north stand is intended for guest fans and there is also space for disabled visitors here. The opposite stand in the east is the most popular and is often used by families. The stadium control center of the police is located on the south stand, which is reserved for the guest fans and holds almost 2,000 spectators. Plexiglass strips are embedded in the roofs of the grandstands to provide a better light supply for the natural grass .
In May 2009 the stadium received the RICS East of England Award from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors .
