The Roots Hall Stadium (short: Roots Hall ) is a football stadium in Southend-on-Sea , County Essex in eastern England . The football club Southend United is the owner and plays its home games there. The stadium, which opened in 1955, now has a capacity of 12,392 spectators in the completely covered grandstands. Since 2006 there are plans to build a new stadium called Fossetts Farm Stadium and 22,000 seats. In 2008 the association received the building permit. In August 2010 it was announced that construction would start within the next twelve months. The work will not begin in spring 2016.
