history
The stadium opened in 1861. The first fortified grandstand was built in 1922. It was created on the side where the grandstand West Stand is today. At this point in time, all other grandstands were mounds of earth and ash. The second fortified grandstand was built seven years later on Bishop Street. The current name of the grandstand is Bishop Street Stand . The North Stand and South Stand grandstands were also built as fortified grandstands in 1947 and 1957, respectively. Further extensions to the West Stand were carried out from 1966 to 1971. In 1995, plans to build a new stadium circulated because the Field Mill was out of date, but these plans were discarded. In the period between 1999 and 2001, further construction and expansion were carried out. On July 28, 2001, the stadium was completed in its current form.
