The St James' Park is a football stadium in Exeter . It seats 8,830 spectators and is the home of the Exeter City club .
history
St. James' Park in Exeter , the capital of the county of Devon in south-west England , was built in 1904 and opened on September 10th of the same year. The reason for the construction of the stadium was the founding of the Exeter City football club, also in 1904, which needed a stadium as a venue for home games. Since then, Exeter City has been using St. James' Park for home football games. The club played from 1920 to 2003 continuously, but also unsuccessfully, in the lower leagues of English professional football, that is, in the various leagues of the Football League . The club, against which the Brazilian national soccer team is said to have played their first game in 1914, is currently found in the EFL League Two , the fourth highest English division.
St. James' Park in Exeter is one of the smallest stadiums in England's fourth league, with a capacity of 8,830, which is understandable given that Exeter City is one of the smallest clubs in this league. The attendance record at this stadium was achieved when Sunderland AFC visited Exeter for a sixth round FA Cup game in 1932 and won 4-2. 20,984 spectators came to St. James' Park for this game. However, it has to be said that even more spectators were allowed in the stadium back then. The current capacity was only achieved through renovation works in 1994, during which the main focus was on improving safety and modernizing the stadium. A special feature of St. James' Park is that there is a station on the railway line that runs through Exeter right next to the stadium. With its roof, this station also forms a grandstand for St. James' Park.
