Thorne is a small town in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in the English county of South Yorkshire and had a total of 16,592 inhabitants according to the 2001 census.

Thorne is an important hub in both road and rail traffic. Here the M180 branches off from the M18 to the east in the direction of Scunthorpe and Grimsby . Ten kilometers north of Goole , the M18 joins the M62 ( Liverpool - Kingston upon Hull ). To the south-west it leads via Doncaster to Sheffield , where there is a connection to the M1 ( London - Leeds ).
At Thorne, the South TransPennine route branches off from the Sheffield – Hull railway line . There are direct connections to Manchester , Hull and Grimsby (- Cleethorpes ). The nearest airports are Doncaster / Sheffield Airport (12 km), Humberside Airport (40 km) and Manchester Airport (120 km away). The latter can also be reached by train.
