Metropolitan Boroughs in South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire [ ˌsaʊθˈjɔːkʃə ] is a metropolitan county in England . It is bordered by Derbyshire , West Yorkshire , North Yorkshire , East Riding of Yorkshire , Lincolnshire, and Nottinghamshire .

The metropolitan county of South Yorkshire was created as part of the municipal reform of 1974 and was from the southern part of the West Riding of Yorkshire by Yorkshire formed.

The main cities of South Yorkshire are:

  • Sheffield , an industrial city with a history dating back to the Iron Age and England's fourth largest city , the only one in South Yorkshire
  • Doncaster , city traditionally a hub on the English rail network.
  • Rotherham , an industrial town between Sheffield and Doncaster on the River Don
  • Barnsley , a market town on the Dearne River , is the county’s administrative seat

The four metropolitan boroughs of South Yorkshire are named after these cities .

In 1986 the county government was abolished and transferred to the Metropolitan Boroughs. These are part of the Yorkshire and the Humber region . Nevertheless, there is South Yorkshire as a ceremonial county ( ceremonial county ) continued. In addition, the police, public transport and fire services will continue to be used jointly.
