Stainforth is a small town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster , in South Yorkshire , England . It is northeast of Doncaster near Hatfield and Thorne . 6342 inhabitants live here (2001).
etymology
The name of the place is called 'stony ford' and comes from the Old English stanig ('stony') and ford ' ford '. In the first documentary mention in 1428 it was written Staneforde .
history
Stainforth received a Royal Charter (Royal Charter) in 1348 , according to which it was allowed to hold a Friday market and a ten-day fair . The city had a brief high point as a trading center and port, attracting traders from distant regions such as the Isle of Axholme . The importance lost as Bawtry gained in importance.
Stainforth Railway Station opened on July 7, 1856 and closed on October 1, 1866. In the 21st century, the city can be reached via Hatfield and Stainforth railway station .
In 1930, way races were held at Greyhound Stadium .
In the 20th century, Stainforth developed into a mining village, with the Hatfield Main Colliery at its center (1921-2001). The coal mine reopened in 2006 and went back to full production in January 2008. In the 21st century, a 900 MW coal-fired power plant is also due to go online and an industrial area called Hatfield Power Park is to be built. The power station will be connected to Barmston , Yorkshire by a 60 km pipeline , where carbon dioxide will be stored in porous rocks for CO 2 capture and storage under the North Sea.

The international campsite Knight's Stainfort is located in the immediate vicinity of the village .
The coal mine and its surroundings have been used for several television series and films, including Dalziel and Pascoe , Brassed Off and Faith (2005, BBC film about the miners' strikes of 1984/85).
