Isle of Axholme

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Isle of Axholme is part of North Lincolnshire in England. It is the only part of Linconshire west of the River Trent . It lies between the towns of Doncaster , Scunthorpe and Gainsborough .

The area is called Isle , because before it was drained by Cornelius Vermuylen, every place here was on a dry elevation in the surrounding marshland . The Don , which has since been diverted, separated the Isle of Axholme from Yorkshire , the Idle from Nottinghamshire, and the Trent from the rest of Lincolnshire. There are three small towns on the Isle of Axholme: Epworth , Crowle and Haxey . Other locations include Garthorpe , Luddington , Eastoft , Belton , Sandtoft , Westwoodside , Wroot and Owston Ferry .

Much of the northern part of the Isle of Axholme is flat farmland where wheat and sugar beets are grown. The soil is particularly fertile due to the earlier annual floods from the Trent and the peat soil attributable to dense woodland that covered the area. Even today, petrified wood can be found two meters below the surface in many areas of the northern island, which is called bog oaks in the area .
