history

Gainsborough Old Hall Castle was built between 1460 and 1480 for Sir Thomas Burgh mainly in half-timbered construction and is one of the best preserved medieval manor houses in Great Britain. The monumental "Great Hall" and the view from the brick north-east tower are particularly worth seeing. In 1483 King Richard III visited the castle, 1541 King Henry VIII.

After plans to develop Gainsborough into a New Town and ultimately make it a residential suburb of Sheffield were not realized, the city continued to be a small market town.

The banks of the Trent , which runs through Gainsborough , have recently been rebuilt and provided with lounge areas to give residents and tourists better access to the river.
