Coaching career

Beginnings

His first two coaching positions at Portsmouth FC and Plymouth Argyle between January 1989 and June 1990 both lasted just a few months. From 1991 to 1994 Gregory worked under Brian Little in the coaching staff of Leicester City and Aston Villa (1994-1996).

Wycombe Wanderers

From September 1996 he coached the Wycombe Wanderers, who were then in the lower half of the League Two table . However, Gregory made it to secured midfield at the end of the season.

Aston Villa

In February 1998, Gregory became a coach at Aston Villa. He helped the team improve their league form during the last three months of the 1997/98 season and finished seventh in the UEFA Cup qualification. In the middle of the 1998/99 season , Aston Villa was top of the table, but due to a low form at the end of the season, the team ultimately only reached 6th place.

Aston Villa reached the FA Cup final in 2000, but lost there to Chelsea .

In January 2002, Gregory left Aston Villa.

Derby County

Gregory's next coaching job was with Derby County from January 2002 to March 2003. Derby County was in the bottom half of the table. He won the first two games as a coach at Derby County and it looked like Derby County would make it through the league. But after the team had lost seven of their last eight games, Derby County was relegated from the Premier League after six years . He was fired in March 2003 for alleged wrongdoing but received a million pound severance pay.

Queens Park Rangers

On September 20, 2006, he was coached by the Queens Park Rangers after Gary Waddock had previously left the club. On October 1, 2007, he was fired for ongoing poor team performance.

In the 2018/19 season he coached Chennaiyin FC in India .
