Northampton Town (officially: Northampton Town Football Club ) - also known as The Cobblers ( German  Die Schuster ) - is an English football club from Northampton that has been playing in EFL League One , the third highest professional league in England , since the 2020/21 season .

history

The club was founded in 1897 by teachers from the Northampton and District Elementary Schools' Association . In the same year the club became a member of the Northamptonshire League , in 1899 the club moved to the Midland League , in 1901 to the Southern League .

When the Third Division was formed in 1920, Northampton was accepted into the Football League . Until 1961 they always played in the lowest professional class (first third division, from 1958 fourth division ). Then began a rapid ascent that led the club to the First Division until 1965 . The Cobblers , as the club is also known, had to relegate after a year in 21st place, but this year is still the most successful season of the club. On April 23, 1966, in what was then County Ground (since 1994 they have been playing in the smaller but modern Sixfields Stadium ) with 24,523 spectators against Fulham FC, the visitor record that is still valid today was set up.

After relegation from the first division, things went downhill again as quickly as they had previously gone up. In 1969 Northampton Town was back in fourth division and since then one has been commuting between the two lowest English professional leagues. The most prominent player today was the German national goalkeeper and world champion Ron-Robert Zieler , who played as a largely unknown 19-year-old at Northampton Town in the 2008/09 season, but only made two appearances.
