Ron-Robert Zieler (born February 12, 1989 in Cologne ) is a German soccer goalkeeper who is on loan from Hannover 96 to 1. FC Cologne . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he became the second substitute goalkeeper with the national team .

Life

Ron-Robert Zieler is the son of the former professional soccer player and junior coach Raimunt Zieler (1. FC Köln U17, Viktoria Köln U17). He was a student at the Städtisches Hölderlin-Gymnasium in Cologne-Mülheim and obtained his secondary school leaving certificate in Cologne . Zieler has been married to Anna Alexandra since June 16, 2018.

Career in clubs

youth

Zieler was initially a field player in the youth teams of SCB Preußen Köln . As a goalkeeper, he was used when no alternatives were available for this position. During an indoor tournament, 1. FC Köln became aware of Zieler and brought him to their youth department. There he played for six years. In the following period he was appointed to the Middle Rhine selection.

Manchester United

On July 1, 2005, at the age of 16, he signed a contract with Manchester United as a professional footballer. He made his debut for the reserve team on March 15, 2007 in a 3-0 home loss to Sheffield United . In the following season Zieler took turns in goal with Tom Heaton . For the 2008/09 season he moved up to the club's professional squad. At the League Cup game on September 23, 2008, he was appointed for the first time for the matchday squad, but was not used.

On November 28, 2008 the United officials decided to lend targets to the third division Northampton Town . There he was to act as second goalkeeper behind Chris Dunn until Frank Fielding returned from a loan deal. The loan lasted until February 25, 2009.

Zieler made his debut in professional football on February 21, 2009 in a game against FC Walsall . After returning to Manchester United, the goalkeeper established himself on the reserve team. He was injured in a clash in a league match, was out for a longer period and was rarely used after his recovery.

Hannover 96

For the 2010/11 season , Zieler moved to Hannover 96 on a free transfer . He made his debut for the second team of the 96 on August 6, 2010 (1st matchday) in the 0-1 defeat in the away game against SV Wilhelmshaven .

For his first appearance in the professional team of Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga, Zieler came on January 16, 2011 (18th matchday) in a 3-0 win in the away game against Eintracht Frankfurt . The coach Mirko Slomka offered him for the previous goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz . With the exception of a two-week injury break, Zieler was set up throughout the second half of the season and in the following five Bundesliga seasons. After the end of the 2010/11 season, he was voted the fourth best goalkeeper in the league by the soccer magazine Kicker . He played his 100th Bundesliga game for Hannover 96 on December 21, 2013 in a 2-1 defeat in the away game against SC Freiburg . On November 1, 2015, in the league game against Hamburger SV (2: 1), Zieler played his 153rd first division game in a row for Hannover 96 and set the club record that had been held by Hans-Josef Hellingrath .

From the 2015/16 season he was deputy team captain of Hannover 96 behind Christian Schulz . His contract ran until June 30, 2017.

When Hannover 96 was relegated in April 2016, Zieler announced his departure from the club.

Leicester City

At the end of May 2016, he used an exit clause in his contract with Hannover 96 and held contract talks with the English champions Leicester City . He was signed by Leicester City in early June 2016 and received a contract that runs until 2020. On August 27, he was substituted on in the league game against Swansea City when goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel injured himself during the game.

VfB Stuttgart

On July 11, 2017, Zieler moved to VfB Stuttgart and signed a contract running until June 2020 as the successor to Mitchell Langerak , who had left the club. Zieler played all of the season's games, reached the round of 16 in the DFB Cup with the team and was eighth in the league with her; only Manuel Neuer from champions Bayern Munich had conceded fewer goals. In the 2018/19 season, the keeper never missed a minute of the game, but had to reach behind him on average twice per game and was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga after the unsuccessful relegation with VfB.

Return to Hanover and Cologne

For the season 2019/20 returned Zieler 96 back to Hanover. He signed a contract with the previous season's co-relegated team until June 30, 2023 and ousted regular goalkeeper Michael Esser , who then moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . The goalkeeper only missed three competitive games, but could not improve his rate of goals conceded and failed with Hanover as sixth in the table due to direct promotion. During the summer break that followed, Esser was brought back to Hanover and was given the guarantee by Managing Director Martin Kind to be number 1 again. However, according to the child, Zieler “shouldn't have been obliged” and would have “no more chance” in Hanover. Head coach Kenan Kocak and sports director Gerhard Zuber , who attributed the goalkeeper to the loss of many important points, also shared this view.

For the 2020/21 season, Zieler finally switched to 1. FC Köln , where he was trained, for a year on loan in his native city .

Career in the national team

youth

Starting in 2004, Zieler went through the age groups U-16 to U-20. He was part of the squad of the U-19 national team, which reached the final during the 2008 European Championship in the Czech Republic and was able to defeat Italy 3-1. In 2009 he took part with the U-20 national team in the Junior World Championship in Egypt and reached the quarter-finals with the team as a regular goalkeeper .

A national team

On August 19, 2011 he was appointed to the senior national team for the first time. On November 11, 2011, he came to Kiev for his first international match in a 3-3 draw against Ukraine . He conceded three goals in the first half, but was praised for his achievements by the national coach, among other things. At the European Championship in 2012 he took part as a substitute goalkeeper in the German squad. In his second game for the senior national team, in the test international match against Argentina on August 15, 2012, he was sent off after 30 minutes with the red card after an emergency brake - as the first goalkeeper of the senior national team of the DFB ever.

Zieler was nominated in the squad for the 2014 World Cup and became world champion with the team, but remained unused alongside the first substitute goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and three outfield players.

He played his sixth and so far last international match against the USA on June 10, 2015 .
