Rafael Czichos (born May 14, 1990 in Jeddah , Saudi Arabia ) is a German football player . He has been playing for 1. FC Köln since the 2018/19 season .

Career

Czichos was born in Jeddah when his father was working in Saudi Arabia.

In his youth he played for TSV Ottersberg and FC Verden 04 . He returned to TSV Ottersberg and played with him in the major league for two years. In 2010 he moved to the regional league for VfL Wolfsburg II . There he was only used in the second team. In the summer of 2012 he went to FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt . There he signed a contract that ran until 2013 with an option for a further year.

For the 2015/16 season , Czichos switched to league competitor Holstein Kiel and even became captain there. After missing promotion to the Bundesliga at the end of the 2017/18 season, he joined 1. FC Köln . Czichos rose at the end of the season with Cologne as a regular defender as a champion of the 2nd Bundesliga in the first Bundesliga. There he scored his first goal in the 1st Bundesliga in the 1: 4 defeat against RB Leipzig on matchday 12.

On February 22, 2020, Czichos suffered a serious cervical spine injury in a Bundesliga match against Hertha BSC after he collided with Marko Grujić in a duel . A few weeks later it was announced that he had only just barely escaped paraplegia .
