The 2015/16 season of the 3rd football league was the eighth season of the single-track, third-highest German division in men's football .
The season started on July 24, 2015 with the game between promoted 1. FC Magdeburg and FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt (2: 1) and ended with the 38th matchday on May 14, 2016. From December 21, 2015 to January 21, 2016, the season was interrupted by the winter break. The relegation matches between the sixteenth of the 2nd Bundesliga and the third of the 3rd division were scheduled for May 20, 2016 (first leg) and May 24, 2016 (second leg).
Dynamo Dresden secured promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga after just 33 match days and the championship title in the 3rd division after 36 match days. One match day before the end of the season, FC Erzgebirge Aue also achieved promotion and the Würzburger Kickers took part in the relegation games, in which they prevailed against MSV Duisburg and were also promoted.
On the 36th matchday, VfB Stuttgart II was the first to be relegated. It was not until the last match day after the final whistle of the respective games that the Stuttgarter Kickers and Energie Cottbus were confirmed as the other two relegated to the regional leagues; even in the course of the last game day this table status remained open several times. As the fourth of the season, 1. FC Magdeburg will take part in the first round of the DFB Cup 2016/17 , which was also only decided on this last match day.
