Horst Steffen (born March 3, 1969 in Krefeld ) is a former German soccer player who now works as a coach .
Career as a player
KFC Uerdingen
Steffen played in the junior division of Bayer 05 Uerdingen from 1975 and won the German championship in 1987 with the A youth team around Marcel Witeczek and Ansgar Brinkmann . In 1988 the midfielder began his professional career in Uerdingen. From 1988 to 1991 he played 90 Bundesliga games for Krefeld .
Borussia Monchengladbach
In 1991 Steffen moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach for two seasons , for which he was on the field in 24 competitive games. He scored his only goal in the 1992/93 DFB Cup. In his second year under coach Jürgen Gelsdorf he only made two Bundesliga appearances, the new coach Bernd Krauss , who was signed up in November 1992, no longer relied on the young midfielder. Then Steffen moved back to Bayer 05 Uerdingen in 1993.
MSV Duisburg
After three more years in Uerdingen, he signed a contract with MSV Duisburg in 1996 . Here Steffen played for three years in the Bundesliga (36 games) and after relegation three years in the second division , in which he played a total of 40 times for MSV, but remained without a goal.
In total, Steffen played 207 times in the Bundesliga, scored 16 goals and was on the pitch 75 times in the second division, where he scored seven goals.
Career as a coach
After his professional time, Steffen was coach of the national league club SC Kapellen-Erft and rose with this in the 2003/04 season in the association league Niederrhein . He then became a U-23 coach at MSV and took over the U-19 for a season after a year. In the 2009/10 season he was U-17 trainer at Borussia Mönchengladbach. On July 1, 2010, he took over the U-19 team from Borussia Mönchengladbach. On September 30, 2013, the third division side Stuttgarter Kickers signed him as the new head coach. He received a contract valid until June 30, 2015, the term of which was later extended. In November 2015, the club separated from Steffen after a series of negative events and presented Tomislav Stipić as his successor.
On December 24, 2015, SC Preußen Münster announced that Steffen would take over the post of head coach. He received a contract valid until June 30, 2017 and was released early on October 4, 2016 due to unsuccessfulness. For the 2017/18 season he was signed by Chemnitzer FC and on January 2, 2018, after the team had been overwintered on a relegation zone.
On October 29, 2018, Steffen took up the position of head coach at SV Elversberg after the Saarland club, which was competing in the fourth-class Regionalliga Südwest , separated from the previous incumbent Roland Seitz .
