history

Beginnings and rapid rise (1958–1970)

The second team of the MSV was brought into being in 1958 by those responsible for the club, which at the time was still running under the name Meidericher SV . The background of their introduction was the fact that the club lost many promising talents whose playful class was not enough for a direct inclusion in the league team. However, she only played friendly games in the following time, as it was decided against a report for the game operation. This took place on June 30, 1959, just before the deadline, so that the amateurs were able to play competitive games for the first time in the 1959/60 season. They started in the third district class, which was at the lower end of the league system, and rose regularly in the first few years.

In 1962 there was a decider against local rivals DJK Lösort-Meiderich for promotion to the then fourth-class regional league, in which Horst Gecks scored the 1-0 victory for MSV. That same Gecks made the leap into the first team a year later and became German runner-up in 1964 with Meiderich. While the professionals made a name for themselves in the first few years of the Bundesliga, the amateur team also got stronger and stronger under the aegis of coach Wilhelm Schmidt . The second representation of the club, renamed MSV Duisburg in 1967 , reached the Niederrhein Association League , which was the third-highest division in the system at that time, through renewed promotion . The team was able to hold out in this league for two years before relegation in 1970. This ended the only phase in which she belonged to the third highest division.

Crash and Slow Recovery (1970–1988)

The difficult financial situation of the Bundesliga club from Duisburg prompted its president Wilhelm Tiefenbach to drastically cut the amateur team's funds following relegation from the association league. This led to a migration of the top performers and an attempt to rebuild, for which Herbert Bella, a player of the team, was made the coach. However, Bella couldn't prevent a free fall in the early 1970s and the MSV reserves falling into the 2nd district class. Only there it can stabilize from 1974 and at least two years later it can rise to the highest district class.

The sporting decline had the consequence that the reserve was no longer used for the further training of talented youth players, since a stay in the district class without significant payment was accordingly unattractive for them. Years followed in which this situation persisted and the secondary selection received little attention. It was not until 1985 that it went up again with promotion to the district league. 1988 succeeded the qualification for the fifth class national league, which laid the basis for a redesign of the team.

Stabilization in the upper amateur range (1988-2005)

The task of turning the amateur team back into a real talent factory was taken over by President Dieter Fischdick, who took up the position in 1988 . His concept included not only financial support, but also the appointment of well-known coaches. In 1989, Ewald Lienen, a still active professional from the first team, took over this position and not only began a successful career as a coach, but also led the second team into the now only fourth-class association league in 1992, from which they had left 22 years earlier . After the promotion, the team, which included talent as well as a number of older players, immediately established itself in the new league, but in 1994 under coach Heinz Werner missed the qualification for the newly structured Oberliga Nordrhein as seventh in the table and six points behind SuS 09 Dinslaken , whereby the association league was devalued to the fifth highest division. In the late 1990s, the team was repeatedly among the top tier and in 1999, under Fred Bockholt, achieved the long-awaited promotion to the top division as champions.

After the leap into the Oberliga Nordrhein, there were no adjustment difficulties and the amateurs placed themselves in the middle of the table. In 2002, Bernard Dietz, a European champion from 1980, was introduced as the new coach, but he experienced a difficult first year and had to accept relegation at the end of the 2002/03 season. As the runner-up in the association league, the following year the direct rise was achieved and after that the amateurs of the MSV found their place in the middle of the table again.

Focus on young talent (2005-2016)

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season, a reform came into force with the U-23 regulation, which provided for a very strong orientation of the secondary agencies towards the training of young players. In addition, it led to the renaming of the former MSV Duisburg Amateure in MSV Duisburg II . When MSV returned to the Bundesliga in the same year, the specifications were consistently implemented, so that from now on almost exclusively players who were at the beginning of a possible professional career were used in it. In the 2007/08 season, the talents qualified for the newly created NRW League and were rather mediocre in this, before a new coach, Djuradj Vasic , was signed in 2011 . Under Vasic, the third place in the table was reached in 2011/12, making the reserve team one of the direct promoters in the redesigned fourth-class Regionalliga West . However, she could not hold herself at this level and in 2013 had to go to the Oberliga Niederrhein as the penultimate.

In May 2016, the MSV announced that they wanted to withdraw the U-23 team from play at the end of the season.

In the cup

In the past, the reserve of the MSV regularly took part in the district cup and was able to qualify regularly for the Lower Rhine Cup in this way . The last time she was able to draw attention to herself in the context of this competition in the 2002/03 season, when she made it to the Niederrhein Cup semifinals, even if it was lost 5-0 to SSVg Velbert . A final victory would have meant participation in the DFB Cup , which never happened. In view of the fact that second teams were excluded from the DFB Cup with effect from the 2008/09 season, participation in the district and association cup was discontinued in 2006/07. The last cup game of the second representation was played on May 16, 2006 against TSV Heimaterde Mülheim and ended with a 0-1 defeat.

Former players

Below are some players who were or are successful as professionals and who can also look back on a permanent affiliation to the second team.

The team’s record player is Herbert Bella, the younger brother of the national team and Michael Bella who has played in the Bundesliga for many years . He was part of the team from 1961 and remained loyal to it for a full decade, most recently in a double role as player-coach . Because the data from the early years of the amateurs are incomplete, the exact number of deployments is not known. However, he was never used for the first team of the MSV or any other professional club. With Franz-Josef Steininger and Tanju Öztürk , on the other hand, there were also players who, in addition to a considerable career in professional football, were more than 100 times for the second selection. Also noteworthy is the career of goalkeeper Rainer Rissel , who after many years of membership in the team made it to the professional squad and made his first and only second division appearance at the age of 40.

Venues

The second team of MSV Duisburg usually played their home games in the Meiderich stadium , which is integrated into the club's training center on Westender Strasse in the Meiderich district . It has a natural grass pitch and can accommodate up to 5,000 spectators, although the schauinsland-Reisen-Arena was used as an alternative venue for risk games . The Meiderich stadium is a historic sports facility, as it was built in the early 20th century, once served as the home ground for the first team and at times accommodated 27,000 visitors.
