Rainer Rissel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rainer Rissel (born December 15, 1942 ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper . He was active as a player and later as a coach for MSV Duisburg for a total of more than 50 years and made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga at the age of 40.

Career

Time as a player

Even during his school days, Rissel dreamed of a career at Meidericher SV (renamed MSV Duisburg in 1967), but this failed because of the will of his parents. For example, he was only allowed to start playing football after graduating from school at the age of 14 and starting training as an electrician. Although he did not succeed in joining the first team that co-founded the Bundesliga in 1963 , he later guarded the goal for the amateur team of MSV .

When the club was relegated to the second division in 1982 after 19 uninterrupted years in the top division, Rissel's loyalty to the club was rewarded with an appointment to the professional squad. Behind Gerhard Heinze and the talented Wolfgang de Beer who had moved up at the same time , however, he was only the third choice and had little prospect of deployments. At least he sat on the bench a few times, including on May 21, 1983, when de Beer was guarding the gate against SG Union Solingen . He had to reach behind him twice before he was substituted in the 53rd minute due to an injury. Rissel actually made his second division debut at the age of 40 years, five months and six days and remained without a goal until the final whistle. At the same time, this remained his only consideration in his professional career, which ended again in the same year. It had been 26 years since he joined the MSV.

Change to the coaching post

Rissel remained in football beyond his time as a player by acting as a coach. Most recently, he was assistant coach of the U-19 team at MSV Duisburg, which competed in the junior Bundesliga. At the end of the 2012/13 season, the now 71-year-old said goodbye and retired.
