Fred-Werner Bockholt , mostly just Fred Bockholt (born June 24, 1943 in Bottrop ), is a former German football player . The goalkeeper graduated from 1963 to 1981 in the football regional leagues West (122 for Bottrop and RW Essen) and South (35 for Offenbach), 2nd Bundesliga (117 for Leverkusen) and Bundesliga (220 for Essen, Offenbach, Leverkusen) a total of 494 competitive games. This does not include the games in the promotion rounds to the Bundesliga in 1968 and 1969 (15) with Essen and 1972 (8) with Offenbach, appearances in the DFB Cup, the number of association games in the 2nd League West with VfB Bottrop and the games in the 1964/65 season in the Niederrhein amateur league.

Career

Bottrop and Essen, until 1971

The goalkeeper Fred-Werner Bockholt went through the youth stations at VfB Bottrop in his hometown and guarded the goal of the Jahnstadion team trained by Werner Stahl in the last season of the old second-class 2nd division West, 1962/63 . The black and whites celebrated the title win against the tied runner-up TuS Duisburg 48/99 . With the introduction of the Bundesliga for the 1963/64 round, Bottrop then belonged to the second-rate Regionalliga West. Without the relocated supports of the championship eleven, Diethelm Ferner and Werner Kubek , Bottrop started with goalkeeper Bockholt on August 4, 1963 with a 1-0 away win at SW Essen in the 20-club regional league season. With the home record of 22:16 points - including two successes against champions Alemannia Aachen (2: 1) and runner-up Wuppertaler SV (1: 0) - relegation would have been possible, but only 8:30 points were enough in the away games at the end of the round only to 17th place - one point behind Herten and Horst-Emscher - and led to relegation to the amateur camp due to the relegation of Prussia Münster from the Bundesliga. Bockholt, who had distinguished himself in the Regionalliga with excellent reflexes and parades, stayed with VfB in the Amateur League Niederrhein and celebrated the championship with VfB with eight points ahead of VfB Lohberg and thus the immediate return to the Regionalliga. In the second regional round in 1965/66, Dieter Herzog was an outstanding offensive talent among his team-mates, but as the penultimate - two points behind Eintracht Gelsenkirchen, Westfalia Herne and Bayer Leverkusen - Bottrop was relegated again after only one season in 1966. After the class was not held, the goalkeeper accepted the offer of the vice-champion RW Essen - in the Jahnstadion Essen won 2-0 and on the Hafenstrasse with 2-1 goals and Bockholt had convinced in both games - for the round 1966/67 and tried to prove himself after 64 regional league appearances in the Bundesliga.

When freshly baked Bundesliga -Aufsteiger Rot-Weiss Essen , goalkeeper was Hermann horse with 21 season appearances in the Bundesliga, the man came from Bottrop under coach Fritz Pliska 04 1 against FC Schalke make his Bundesliga debut on 21 January 1967 when the first Coach Pliska praised the debutant in the press conference after the game:

He held up well in his first Bundesliga game and was a calm and valuable support for the back team. "

Despite the good other newcomers Peter Dietrich and Heinz Simmet, RWE was relegated from the first division as bottom of the table. Bockholt had played 13 Bundesliga games and stayed in Essen and tried to get promoted again with the new coach Erich Ribbeck in the 1967/68 series. He guarded the Essen goal in all 34 games and the Red-Whites came tied on points with champions Bayer Leverkusen to the runner-up and thus moved into the Bundesliga promotion round in 1968. The goalkeeper, who was extremely strong in jumping, was also in action in all eight games against competitors Hertha BSC, SV Alsenborn, SC Göttingen 05 and FC Bayern Hof. But it was enough with 9: 7 points only to second place and thus also in 1968/69 another round in the Regionalliga West followed. Now Kuno Klötzer was the coach and in the exciting three-way battle for the top of the table with RW Oberhausen and VfL Bochum, it was just enough to make it to the runner-up again compared to Bochum with the same points. In 34 championship games, the RWE Defensive had only allowed 25 goals. In the promotion round - with Willi Vordenbäum as coach - on the other hand, Bockholt and his teammates confidently prevailed with 14: 2 points against VfL Osnabrück, Karlsruher SC, Tasmania 1900 Berlin and TuS Neuendorf and thus returned to the Bundesliga. Under coach Herbert Burdenski , Bockholt was the undisputed goalkeeper of the Ruhr Area Club and was able to improve his performance again. After 34 league games - RWE came in twelfth place - he was ranked eighth in the Bundesliga player ranking with a grade of 2.35. RWE was the team with the most draws this season, the team drew a total of 15 games from Hafenstrasse. A better placement was prevented by the 7:27 points in the away games, which was weak, while the 24:10 home points were the result of seven home wins and ten draws. In these 17 games, Bockholt had to concede only 17 hits. He played with his old colleague from the Bottrop championship days in the 1962/63 series, Diethelm Ferner , and Willi Lippens scored 12 goals in only 21 games in attack . Bockholt performed so well this season that he was challenged by teammates for the national team. The Essen institution Werner Kik was enthusiastic about the goalkeeper:

Hardly any other goalkeeper dives as quickly and explosively as Bockholt and even holds flat balls. In my opinion, he can compete with Sepp Maier and Horst Wolter in every respect. "

In the following game year, 1970/71, RWE was eighth after the first half of the season with 16:18 points. When the relegation question was massively manipulated in the second half of the season as a result of the Bundesliga scandal, the Essenes came under the wheels and were relegated to the Regionalliga West with 23:45 points. Bockholt went into the second division, but not with food, he switched to Kickers Offenbach in the Regionalliga Süd.

Offenbach and Leverkusen, 1971 to 1981

On the Bieberer Berg, in the year one after the Bundesliga scandal, all efforts were made to immediately return to the Bundesliga. In addition to Bockholt, the attackers Sigfried Held and Erwin Kostedde and, for the defense, the Austrian international Hans Schmidradner joined the team of coach Kuno Klötzer . In fact, Offenbach did not lose a game in the Regionalliga Süd, won the championship and also prevailed in the promotion round and immediately returned to the Bundesliga. On April 15, 1972 Offenbach dismantled 1. FC Nürnberg on the Bieberer Berg with 6-0 goals, showed Bayreuth and Reutlingen with the same result the limits and even defeated the Stuttgarter Kickers with 7-0 goals. The two games against his former club Rot-Weiss Essen had a special character in the promotion round on May 28 and June 11, 1972 for Bockholt. The two toughest competitors for the promotion place each parted with 2: 2 and 1: 1 draws. In the end, if there was a tie, the better goal difference for Offenbach decided.

In the second year in Offenbach, 1972/73, the newcomers Josef Hickersberger , Manfred Ritschel , Amand Theis and, surprisingly, a new coach, Gyula Lóránt, joined the Kickers. On September 16, 1972, the BL returnee won the first point with an excellent goalkeeper Bockholt at Werder Bremen with a 0-0 draw on the day the Bundesliga started. When the OFC lost their away game at MSV Duisburg with 0: 4 goals on October 27th, MSV keeper Dietmar Linders saved a weak penalty from Bockholt in the 68th minute. Over the entire round, Bockholt got the best player rating of the OFC squad with 2.85 and impressed with outstanding performances in the 0-1 defeat on March 31 at HSV and the 3-2 away win on May 19, 1973 at VfL Bochum. In addition to the two successes - 3-2 win at home; 3-0 win in the Waldstadion - against local rivals Eintracht Frankfurt, the 4-2 win on April 18, 1973 in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup against the championship leader FC Bayern Munich with seven points was one of the sporting highlights for Bockholt and his team Teammates from the Bundesliga promoted team. At the end of the round, the entry into the UEFA Cup with the seventh place was only just missed.

Before the second round of the Bundesliga with the OFC, 1973/74, Bockholt had the bad luck with an injury. During the preparatory period he suffered a severe broken ankle and was not able to actively intervene again until January 1974. The club had loaned Bernd Helmschrot at short notice and Bockholt made nine appearances during the second half of the season. After the 1974 World Cup he was again the goalkeeper in Offenbach and in 1974/75 he played all 34 rounds under the new coach Otto Rehhagel . The season began on August 24, 1974 with the bang of a 6-0 victory over the reigning German champions FC Bayern Munich . On September 21, Offenbach won 1-0 at 1. FC Köln and Bockholt crowned his performance with two saved penalties. In the 45th minute he succeeded against Johannes Löhr and in the 88th minute against Harald Konopka . After the 3-2 home win on November 8, 1974, Bockholt and colleagues led the Bundesliga table with 17: 7 points and on January 25, 1975 they also achieved the second round success in the second round match against Bayern Munich with 3-2 goals. Offenbach took eighth place at the end of the round and Bockholt had played a first-class season when he moved to the second division Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the age of 32

After the Werkself with Bockholt in goal escaped relegation in the previous season due to a winning streak at the end of the season, Bayer 04 surprisingly rose to the Bundesliga as champions of the second division in the 1978/79 season . Bockholt guarded the goal in all 38 association games of the championship team. Coach Willibert Kremer and his team set a starting record of 18: 0 points and it was not until February 1979 that Fortuna Köln suffered their first defeat. Bockholt played all Bundesliga games for Leverkusen in his 1980/81 farewell season and then ended his career in the summer of 1981 at the age of 38.

In total, Bockholt made 220 Bundesliga appearances and was considered a person of reliability, especially in his years at Bayer Leverkusen.

After his active career Bockholt worked as a coach, and he because of his profession as a teacher of mathematics and physical education at a mining - vocational school strove in Duisburg no activity in the professional sector. After engagements at Preussen Krefeld , Schwarz-Weiß Essen , Rot-Weiß Oberhausen (promotion to the Oberliga Nordrhein in 1993 and the Regionalliga 1995), FC Remscheid and the amateur team of MSV Duisburg (promotion to the Oberliga 1999), he last led the 1. FC Kleve in the league in 2003. He later returned to Schwarz-Weiß Essen as a scout and goalkeeping coach, and on May 2, 2008 he was appointed head coach for the last three games of the season.
