Werner Kik (born January 30, 1939 ) is a former German football player who played a total of 293 league games as a player for Rot-Weiss Essen between 1960 and 1970 in the Oberliga West , 2nd League West, Regional League West and Bundesliga .

career

For the round 1960/61 Werner Kik came from the amateur camp of TuS Heessen to the western upper division club Rot-Weiss Essen. Under coach Willi Multhaup , he made his debut on the first round match day, August 14, 1960 at the home game against Preußen Münster in the Oberliga West. He and half-forward Franz Islacker formed the right wing of the team from the Hafenstrasse stadium in the 3-0 win against Münster. Fritz Herkenrath guarded the goal, Otto Rehhagel defended, Heinz Wewers directed the defense and Heinz Hornig caused danger on the left wing. After the fourth game day, the Bergeborbecker - tied with 6: 2 points - were in second place in front of Meiderich and Aachen. After the last game day, May 13, 1961, the club of Georg Melches had to relegate one point behind SV Sodingen in the 2nd League West. Kik had played 21 games and scored one goal.

Kik stayed with RWE even after relegation and tried in vain in the last two rounds of the old first-class league era, 1961/62 and 1962/63 , to play seriously for the championship in the II division . With coach Günter Hentschke it was only enough to finish fifth and sixth. Kik completed 53 games in the 2nd division and scored 13 goals. In the debut year of the Bundesliga, 1963/64, he started a new attempt with RWE in the newly created Regionalliga West. Now trainer Fred Harthaus was in command of the sport, but there could be no question of top positions among the Red-Whites. The ranks ten and seven were not satisfactory for the German champion of 1955. In the year of the soccer world championship 1966 in England, 1965/66 , Essen won the runner-up in the western regional league with coach Fritz Pliska and the newcomer Willi Lippens and then sat in the promotion round against the rivals St. Pauli, 1. FC Saarbrücken and FC Schweinfurt 05 and got promoted to the Bundesliga. Kik had completed 30 regional league games and all six promotion games.

After the first half of the Bundesliga season in 1966/67 , Essen was in twelfth place with 15:19 points. In the second half of the season, the Pliska-Elf could only get ten points and at the end of the round rose back to the regional league together with the second promoted Fortuna Düsseldorf. Werner Kik had played 32 games and is ranked second in the season's player rating with an average of 2.34 behind Franz Beckenbauer, tied to Horst Wolter . This was followed by two rounds of the regional league in 1968 and 1969, each time winning the runner-up and moving into the promotion round. 1967/68 failed Kik and his teammates with the young coach Erich Ribbeck in the promotion round at Hertha BSC. Twelve months later they prevailed under interim trainer Willi Vordenbäum against the competitors VfL Osnabrück, Karlsruher SC, Tasmania 1900 Berlin and TuS Neuendorf and moved back into the Bundesliga. In the Regionalliga West from 1963/64 to 1968/69 Kik was active in 137 league games and in all 22 promotion round matches (1966, 1968, 1969). In the Bundesliga round 1969/70 he came under coach Herbert Burdenski and at the side of teammates Fred-Werner Bockholt , Wolfgang Rausch , Heinz Stauvermann , Erich Beer , Peter Czernotzky , Egbert-Jan ter Mors , Diethelm Ferner , Herbert Weinberg , Georg Jung and Willi Lippens on 28 missions and finished twelfth with Rot-Weiss. Werner Kik, who had moved from the storm to the defense in the course of his career, became a figure of identification for the fans in the Georg-Melches-Stadion , a role model of hard work, commitment and reliability.

In the summer of 1970 he ended his football career and devoted himself to his professional advancement.
