In 1950 he took over Sparta Nordhorn as a trainer and remained in office until 1952. His other coaching stations were the clubs VfR Kirn (1952–1954, Oberliga Südwest), FC Phönix Ludwigshafen (1954–1956, Oberliga Südwest), Preußen Münster (1956–1958, Oberliga West), Duisburger SpV (1958–1961, Oberliga West) and Rot-Weiss Essen (1961–1963, 2nd Oberliga West). In 1983 he made a short-term comeback as a coach. He took over the second division club BV 08 Lüttringhausen . It was planned that Hentschke, equipped with the necessary coaching license , would share the tasks with manager Detlef Pirsig , who is also a player. But soon there were internal quarrels between Hentschke and Pirsig, which ultimately led to Hentschke's dismissal. Günter Exner was his successor .

Hentschke was later still active at his home association Niederrhein as an assessor for coaching matters in the youth sector.
