The FC Remscheid is a football club from Remscheid . It was created from a merger of BVL 08 Remscheid (originally BV 08 Lüttringhausen) and VfB Marathon 06/08 Remscheid. The former second division team is the most successful club from the Bergisch city and also drew attention to itself as a "cup scare" in the 1980s. Although FC Remscheid was originally founded as a football club, the club now also has a gymnastics department .
Club history
The previous clubs
VfB Marathon Remscheid
In 1906 the FC 1906 Remscheid was founded. After the dissolution of the FC in 1914, the club was brought back to life in 1917 as VfB 06 Remscheid. During the Second World War , VfB 06 merged with the 1928 VfL Marathon 1928 Remscheid, which until 1937 was SV Edelstahlwerke Remscheid, the company sports association of Deutsche Edelstahlwerke in Remscheid. The name of the club established in 1944 was VfB Marathon 06 Remscheid. From 1945 the club started as the VfB Marathon Remscheid.
In 1968 the VfB Marathon Remscheid became the first Remscheid team to win the German amateur championship, which is also the greatest success in the club's history. In 1971 the VfB Marathon Remscheid merged with BV 08 Remscheid . Since then the club has been called VfB Remscheid 06/08 .
In the 1978/79 season , VfB entered the first round of the DFB Cup and lost there against the second division club Wormatia Worms .
BV 08 Lüttringhausen or BVL 08 Remscheid
On October 25, 1908, BV 08 Lüttringhausen was founded in the then still independent municipality of Lüttringhausen . On March 2, 1912, the club was included in the West German game association. With the outbreak of the First World War , the sports business was completely stopped. In 1917 a game could take place again for the first time. The club beat FC Solingen 6-2. On September 7, 1919, there were already more than 200 members and seven teams available. In the 1930/31 season, the club rose through a brilliant series of victories in the special league, the then top division in the West German Association. During the Second World War, the club had to relegate to the district class due to staffing needs. In the 1979/80 DFB Cup , the Lüttringhausen -based team reached the third round of the DFB Cup after defeating SpVgg Erkenschwick and Westfalia Herne in the first two rounds . In the 1981/82 season, BV 08 Lüttringhausen managed to move up from the Oberliga to the 2nd Bundesliga . However, they rose two years later from bottom of the table. In the 1983/84 and 1984/85 seasons, the team was eliminated in the first round of the DFB Cup against TuS Schloß Neuhaus and FC Bayern Munich .
On August 9, 1985, BV 08 Lüttringhausen was renamed BVL 08 Remscheid. Under this name they won the German amateur championship against VfR Bürstadt in 1986 and played a good role in the DFB-Pokal after they clearly won 3-0 against Bundesliga club 1. FC Kaiserslautern and then only just lost in the replay against Hannover 96 . In this game, Hermann Wulfmeier scored the first goal of the month for the Remscheider Club. In the 1987/88 season , BVL 08 Remscheid was able to play second-rate for another year.
The merger
However, when BVL 08 Remscheid and VfB Remscheid 06/08 both played in the amateur league in 1988, those responsible decided to merge the two clubs. On July 1, 1990, both clubs were merged to form FC Remscheid. BVL 08 Remscheid was completely absorbed by FC Remscheid, only the men's team was outsourced at VfB Remscheid. The rest of the club has existed since then as VfB 06/08 Remscheid, but has not had a football department since 2008.

The time as FC Remscheid
Sporting boom and renewed second class
From 1991 to 1993, the club managed to play again in the 2nd Bundesliga and even reached a single-digit position in the table in its first year. After the merger of the two second division seasons in 1992, FC Remscheid was always in a relegation battle and finally rose as the penultimate in the amateur Oberliga Nordrhein . The attempted rise again failed the Bergischer Verein and the team had to be content with eighth place. With the introduction of the Regionalliga, the Oberliga Nordrhein was only fourth class. The FC Remscheid, however, succeeded there in the 1995/96 season of promotion to Regionalliga West / Südwest and held a total of three seasons in the class before they had to go back to fourth division as bottom of the table with only ten points.

The fall into the national league
After relegation from the regional league, FC Remscheid began to fall steadily into the amateur classes. After the good fourth place in the major league season 1999/2000, the club was relegated to the association league and could not hold the class there either. Since the 2003/04 season, the Bergische club played in the state league, which was only seventh class with the introduction of the third division .
On May 24, 2009, FC Remscheid, as the national league champion, was promoted to a higher league again after 13 years. The club thus entered the sixth class Niederrheinliga in the 2009/10 season . Only a year later, after much turbulence in the team and on the board level, the FCR rose again to the national league. In the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons, the Remscheid team won several times against higher-class teams in the Lower Rhine Cup. In August 2012, FCR beat the then regional division Wuppertaler SV 1-0.
In September 2015, the former Bundesliga professional Thorsten Legat was hired as head coach for media coverage. There was no success; after his resignation in May 2016, the FCR even rose to the district league at the end of the season. After a change in the board and office structure, the club succeeded in the following season 2016/17, five game days before the end of the season, the direct promotion to the Lower Rhine regional league in front of the former league club 1. FC Wülfrath and SV Union Velbert .

Sports facilities
The previous clubs of FC Remscheid played in different stadiums in Remscheid.
Reinshagen stadium
VfB Remscheid 06/08 played its home games in the Reinshagen stadium . Its successor club, the VfB Marathon 1990 Remscheid, still plays here today.
X-ray stadium
BVL 08 Remscheid, on the other hand, played its games first on Jahnplatz in Lüttringhausen and later in Lennep's Röntgen Stadium . In the course of the merger of the two clubs, the stadium was modernized for the 2nd Bundesliga and still serves as the home ground of Remscheid FC. It has a capacity of around 12,000 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Remscheid. There is also a sports field next to the Röntgen Stadium, where the second team of FCR and VfL 07 Lennep play their home games.
Jahnplatz
In addition to the Röntgen Stadium, the club also uses Jahnplatz in Lüttringhausen. This is where the second men's team and most of the youth teams play their games. In 2011, the pitch received artificial turf for 600,000 euros from the economic stimulus package II .
Fans
Despite its low league membership, FC Remscheid has a high fan base. With an average of 400 to 1500 spectators, the club is even ahead of some of the top division clubs. In 2001 the Ultras Remscheid were founded, which have since been renamed "Scene Remscheid". A new fan club, the FCR freaks, has existed since the 2009/10 season. The fans cheer on the team from Block A in the main stand. The trailers originally stood in the uncovered north curve, which is designed for around 2500 spectators. Since an organized fan scene was founded again in early 2001, the covered block A has been used because it has better acoustics.
Fan friendships
A fan friendship that is no longer conceivable today existed between the supporters of SG Union Solingen and the predecessor club of FC Remscheid, BVL 08 Remscheid in the eighties. There have been contacts with Westfalia Herne since the promotion to the Lower Rhine League .
Fan rivalries
The fans of FC Remscheid generally have an aversion to other teams from the Bergisches Land . The rivalry between Wuppertaler SV and Union Solingen is particularly great . Games against these clubs are also known as Bergisches Derby . The three clubs in the major cities in the mountains are the only ones from the region that have ever played in a German professional league.
At the time of play in the regional league, the games against SV 09/35 Wermelskirchen and the former SpVgg were particularly important . Radevormwald (today SC 08 Radevormwald) as particularly explosive.
