The SV Wermelskirchen (officially: Sport-Verein 09 Wermelskirchen eV ) was a sports club from Wermelskirchen in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis . The first soccer team played a year in the then third-class Oberliga Nordrhein .

history

The club was founded on May 26, 1909 as FC Wermelskirchen and was renamed SV Wermelskirchen 09 in 1918 . In 1929, the club Rasensport Wermelskirchen 09 , which was also founded in 1909, joined the SV. On May 6, 2003, the SV 09 Wermelskirchen merged with the TuRu Wermelskirchen association founded in 1935 to form SV 09/35 Wermelskirchen .

After the footballers only played at the local level for decades, they were promoted to the Niederrhein Association League in 1982 . Three years later, the team secured the runner-up behind Hamborn 07 . In 1988 the Wermelskirchener champions of the association league and rose to the upper league. As the penultimate of the 1988/89 season , the team promptly rose again. Back in the association league, the team stayed in the midfield of the league for a few years before relegation to the regional league in 1995 . In 1998 he was promoted to the association league, which was followed two years later by relegation to the regional league. After the merger in 2003 and temporary relegations to the district league A, SV 09/35 succeeded in returning to the district league in the 2016/17 season and returning to the regional league in the 2018/19 season.
