In the 1992/93 season of the 2nd Bundesliga , SC Freiburg , MSV Duisburg and VfB Leipzig were promoted to the Bundesliga .
The league had played in two groups in the previous year due to the inclusion of clubs from the former GDR . This season, the second division were again combined into a single-track league with 24 teams. In order to reach the target strength of 20 clubs again next year, seven teams were relegated.
