Early years (1912 to 1957)

Today's SV Meppen goes back to the Amisia Meppen football club founded by high school students on November 29, 1912 . Amisia is the Latin name of the river Ems . On February 8, 1920, Amisia merged with MTV Meppen, also founded in 1912, and the paramilitary youth group Gruppe Jungdeutschland Meppen to form the Meppen 1912 gymnastics and sports club . As part of the clean divorce , the association split on April 13, 1922. The footballers founded SV Meppen, while the remaining departments founded TV 1912 Meppen .

In the first few years, the footballers played on the “school playground” before the club moved into the Lathener Strasse sports field in 1924. In terms of sport, the Meppeners only played a role at the local level until the end of the Second World War . The Emsland was considered a footballing diaspora and was overshadowed by the clubs from Osnabrück . In the 1920s and 1930s, the club alternately belonged to the West German Game Association and the North German Football Association .

After the war, a team reinforced with numerous Poles made the club known in the region. After a series of 35 games without defeat in a row, SV Meppen qualified in 1947 for the newly introduced Landesliga Weser / Ems . The decisive qualifying game against Stern Emden was lost 2-1, but the Meppeners benefited from the fact that the qualified TuS Lengerich moved to the Westphalian association .

SV Meppen was able to hold itself in the state league for two years before relegation to the third-class amateur league 2 had to be accepted in 1949 . In 1952, the amateur league could only be held by a win in the play-off against TuS Haste 01 , before the move to the Emsland district league took place two years later. In the meantime, SV Union Meppen was the sporting number one in town. In 1957, the SVM became champion of the Emsland district class and thus made it to the 8th amateur league .

Path to the regional league (1957 to 1970)

In terms of sport, the Meppener were able to quickly establish themselves in the league and always occupied single-digit positions in the table. In the 1960/61 season, after a long neck-and-neck race with TuS Lingen , the SVM was one point ahead of the amateur league champions. The subsequent promotion round was also successfully completed. The highlight was an 11-0 win on June 18, 1961 against TuS Heidkrug , in which striker Gerd Sand scored six goals. Sand also proved to be one class higher than accurate and with 33 goals this season had a significant share in relegation.

Coach Horst Witzler moved from VfL Germania Leer to Meppen, under whose direction things went up in sport over the next two years. In the 1963/64 season , the Meppener celebrated the relay victory in the Amateur Oberliga West . In the playoff for the relay victory, the SVM was able to prevail against TSR Olympia Wilhelmshaven 1-0. The game took place in the Oldenburger Stadion Donnerschwee . The finals for the Lower Saxony championship against the amateurs of Hannover 96 followed . Despite a 3-1 success in the first leg, Meppen lost the title with a 5-1 defeat in Hanover. The promotion to the Regionalliga Nord was missed as a third party in the promotion round. The only victory of the round was a spectacular 6: 5 win at Leu Braunschweig .

In the following years, the club was only mediocre in the now single-track Lower Saxony State League . With the former amateur national player Hermann Michel , who took over the training in 1967, the success returned. In his first season in 1967/68 , Michel led the team to the Lower Saxony Championship. However, she failed again in the promotion round to the Regionalliga.

In 1970 , under strange circumstances, he finally made the leap into the regional league. The SVM was allowed to take part in the promotion round as fifth in the table because the amateur teams of Eintracht Braunschweig (champions) and Hannover 96 (fourth) were not allowed. A 1: 1 at SC Sperber Hamburg on the last day of the game brought the Meppeners second place in the promotion round. In order to bring the regional league back to the target strength of 18 clubs, the North German Football Association set an additional relegation. With a 5-1 win on the last match day against the SV Bremen police , the SVM managed to climb one goal ahead of ASV Bergedorf 85 , in which the Meppeners were defeated 0-2.

Up and down in the amateur camp (1970 to 1987)

As a result of the late promotion - most regional league clubs had already started preparing for the season when Meppen's promotion was determined - the SVM could not strengthen itself sufficiently and had to leave the regional league as the bottom of the table. The low point of the season was a 1: 9 defeat at HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst . The team managed to get promoted straight away . The decision was made again on the last match day, when ASV Bergedorf 85 was beaten 4-0 in front of 10,000 spectators. Striker Gerd Sand ended his career with promotion.

SV Meppen has now established itself in the regional league. The association was supported by the textile manufacturer Hubert Niebuhr. Eighth place in the 1973/74 season was not enough for the newly introduced 2nd Bundesliga, so the SVM had to play in the amateur Oberliga Nord . A highlight of this time was a friendly against Ajax Amsterdam with world stars Johan Cruyff and Johan Neeskens in front of 17,500 spectators. As third in the 1974/75 season, the Meppener qualified for the first time for the German amateur championship . In the second round, the SVM was only just eliminated from Itzehoer SV . In the following years, a sporty decline began. One reason for this was Niebuhr's financial policy, which left behind a large mountain of debt. In 1978 the Meppener ended the season as penultimate and had to relegate to the Lower Saxony state league.

The descent turned out to be a stroke of luck for the club. With Hans-Dieter Schmidt , a new trainer was hired to drive youth work and the professionalization of the club structures. His vision of leading SV Meppen into the 2nd Bundesliga was dismissed as "crazy" by the board at the time. With seven points ahead of the Lüneburger SK , Meppen was champion and finished the promotion round as second in the group. Since two northern clubs, OSV Hannover and OSC Bremerhaven, were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga and only one, FC St. Pauli, was relegated to the major league, a playoff for the third promoted team was due. With a 4-1 victory over VfR Neumünster , the SVM managed to get back up straight away.

The SVM quickly established itself in the Oberliga Nord. In the 1979/80 season, the Meppener qualified for the DFB Cup for the first time . Here the team retired in the first round with the amateurs of 1. FC Kaiserslautern . A year later , the SVM was fourth in the league. In 1982 the Meppener completed a friendly against FC Barcelona . 18,500 viewers saw the first appearance of the future world star Diego Maradona in Europe. The 1985/86 season closed the team again as third in the table. At the amateur championship in 1986 , the Meppener failed in the first round at VfR Bürstadt .

In 1987 SV Meppen became champions of the Oberliga Nord under coach Rainer Persike . After a botched start to the season, the Meppener fought an exciting duel with SV Arminia Hannover , which ended with a point ahead in favor of the Emsländer. As an outsider, the team made it into the 2nd Bundesliga with a 4-2 win on the last matchday at SpVgg Erkenschwick in the promotion round . The Emsländer benefited from the simultaneous 3-1 defeat of Hertha BSC against BVL 08 Remscheid . The rise of the team with players from the region was described in the media as a "miracle". Among the 22 players in the squad were 19 native Emslanders.

Meppen in the 2nd Bundesliga (1987 to 1998)

The team, which for financial reasons only appeared as semi-professionals, quickly asserted itself in the 2nd Bundesliga. Thanks to the courageous appearances of the team and the enthusiastic audience, the SVM advanced to a nationwide popular club. Chants of mockery by the opposing fans such as “Take off the Meppeners' rubber boots !” Made the Meppen fans more proud than angry. The two new entrants, the US-American Paul Caligiuri and the Finn Marko-Olavi Myyry , had a large part in relegation . With Caligiuri, SV Meppen provided a World Cup participant in 1990 .

In the 1990/91 DFB Cup , the team advanced to the round of 16, in which they lost with a narrow 1-0 defeat at 1. FC Köln . Before the start of the season there was unrest in the club environment after top performers like Myyry, Caligiuri and Reinhold Tattermusch had been sold and the proceeds invested in the expansion of the stadium. As a result, the team had to fight long to stay in the league. In 1991 Horst Ehrmantraut took over as coach. In its very first season , SVM was the leader of the table for a few weeks thanks to top-class newcomers like Damir Bujan . Finally, the team reached sixth place in the northern group of the then briefly split second Bundesliga. A highlight was a 3-1 win at VfL Osnabrück.

Ehrmantraut led his team into the top tier of the 2nd Bundesliga in the mid-1990s. At the same time, the stadium was modernized for over 2.5 million marks, which the club had to raise itself. The Interior Minister of Lower Saxony at the time, Gerhard Glogowski , rejected a state grant , while his favorite club, Eintracht Braunschweig, received grants for the modernization of the stadium. When the team was put together, the Emsland policy was put aside, so that in the 1992/93 season only half the team consisted of locals.

The SVM reached its sporting zenith in the 1994/95 season , when the team had good chances of promotion to the Bundesliga for months . Strikers Rainer Rauffmann and Jan Sievers scored 15 and 14 goals respectively this season and in Emsland people dreamed of a guest appearance by FC Bayern Munich . A series of four games without a win in the final phase of the season, however, shattered the Bundesliga dreams. The 2-0 defeat at 1. FC Nürnberg was rated as won by the German Football Association for Meppen, as the Nürnberg team had used four instead of the three foreign players allowed at the time.

A year later, the Meppener caused a big surprise in the second round of the DFB Cup when they beat Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1. By investing in the stadium, however, the club could not invest enough money in the team, so that the SVM fell behind in terms of sport. The last highlight of the second division era was a 6-7 defeat at 1. FC Kaiserslautern on the last day of the 1996/97 season . It was the highest scoring game in the history of the second division. The 1997/98 season finally brought the end of Meppener in the second division. A series of eleven games without a win brought the team into the relegation ranks, which they should not leave. Even coach Wolfgang Rolff , who replaced Paul Linz in December 1997 , did not manage to turn around. The SVM finally rose from bottom of the table.

Decline (1998-2011)

With an international team, a direct return to promotion should be achieved at great expense. This was missed far with eleventh place in the 1998/99 regional league season . Coach Mirko Votava was replaced by Rainer Persike, who was eventually replaced by Theo Bücker . In the following season, the Meppener were only eleventh and thus missed the qualification for the two-track regional league from 2000. The only bright spot during this time was the cup game against Bayern Munich in front of 16,500 spectators, which ended in a 1: 4 defeat.

Even in the fourth-class Oberliga Niedersachsen / Bremen, the team had to worry about staying up for a long time. Although she was able to stabilize in terms of sport, liabilities of 1.6 million euros meant that the club had to file for bankruptcy in 2001 . With a newly formed team around the returnees Andreas Helmer , the Meppener played in the top group in the 2001/02 season . Since the necessary licensing documents were submitted too late, the DFB refused the Meppenern the regional league license for formal reasons.

In 2004 the SVM qualified for the single-track Oberliga Nord again. After a false start in the season, the team was able to achieve the eighth place required for qualification after a 5-0 win on the last day of the match at FC Oberneuland and send their worst competitor VfB Oldenburg into the fifth division. After a good third place in the 2004/05 season , in which an 8-1 win at FT Eider Büdelsdorf , the SVM slipped back into mid-table. A year later , qualification for the three-track regional league was missed, which means that SV Meppen was relegated to the fifth-class Oberliga Niedersachsen-West. On the last day of the match, the Meppeners did not get beyond a 1-1 draw at champions Holstein Kiel , while competitor VfB Oldenburg defeated SV Henstedt-Rhen . Oldenburg was seventh with the better goal difference compared to Meppen and took part in the relegation round to the regional league since the sixth TuS Heeslingen did not receive a license.

At this time, the Austrian beverage manufacturer Red Bull contacted the association to invest in it. For investments in the club, Red Bull demanded a majority of 50 + 1 percent as well as a change in the club name, the club emblem and the club colors. SV Meppen rejected the demands. After a good start to the 2009/10 season, there followed a sporty decline; on December 15th, 2009 Rainer Persike took over the post of sporting director. He led the team in 2010 in the single-track Oberliga Niedersachsen. For the 2010/11 season , Johann Lünemann took over as coach. Under his leadership, the team secured the championship title and promotion to the regional league early after a strong second half.

Present (since 2011)

After promotion to the regional league, SV Meppen was represented on the German soccer map for the first time in eleven years. For the 2011/12 season , Michael Holt from Wuppertaler SV and René Wessels from SC Veendam signed two well-known faces. With them, SV Meppen wanted to establish itself in the regional league. On March 25, 2012, coach Johann Lünemann was dismissed and replaced by the previous sporting director Rainer Persike as interim coach until the end of the season. At the end of the 2011/12 regional league season, twelfth place was achieved. Heiko Flottmann took over as coach for the 2012/13 season . On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the club, the club played against Borussia Dortmund on July 11, 2012 . The reigning German champions fell 0: 1 behind, but still managed to win the game 2: 1.

For the 2013/14 season , Christian Neidhart switched to SV Meppen as the sporting director and succeeded Rainer Persike . On May 26, 2013, coach Heiko Flottmann was dismissed, whose position Neidhart also took over. Neidhart led the Meppener in fourth place in the 2013/14 season. On April 6, 2015, the semi-finals of the NFV Cup were won 2-1 against SK Hansa from Lüneburg , making SV Meppen back in the DFB Cup for the first time in 16 years, where they met 1. FC Köln in round one and lost 4-0. In the 2016/17 season , SV Meppen reached the relegation games for promotion to the 3rd division as champions of the Regionalliga Nord. The opponent was SV Waldhof Mannheim from the Regionalliga Südwest . Here, after two goalless draws, they were just 4: 3 i. E. prevail and rose on.

As a result, the ex-national player Ronald Maul was signed as managing director. In addition, the stadium was upgraded through extensive construction work for the new league, also to meet the requirements of the DFB . The north stand has been straightened, wooden benches have been replaced with seats, video surveillance has been expanded and control areas have been expanded. After SV Meppen finished the first season in the higher division with 58 points in 7th place, additional underfloor heating and a new floodlight system were installed. Overall, the city of Meppen and the district of Emsland invested more than four million euros in the Hänsch arena . In 2019, Meppen reached the final of the Lower Saxony Cup again, but lost it 0-1 at SV Drochtersen / Assel and missed qualifying for the DFB Cup.

In the 2019/20 season, they played for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga until the interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic . After the restart, however, it was no longer possible to build on the performance and finished 7th in the table at the end of the season.

After SV Meppen with Benjamin Girth , Nick Proschwitz and Deniz Undav had to let the top scorer go for three consecutive years, coach Neidhart also left the club after seven years for the 2020/21 season . In July 2020 it was announced that the ex-national player Torsten Frings will be the new head coach.

The club plays its home games in the Hänsch Arena. The stadium is in the north of Meppen, on Lathener Straße in the Neustadt district. It was inaugurated in 1924 and renamed the Hindenburg Stadium in 1927 . Since the 1990s it was called Emslandstadion . In 2005 it was renamed Vivaris Arena Emsland . SV Meppen is said to have received a five-digit amount for the renaming. From summer 2011 the stadium was called MEP-Arena , after the sponsor Meppener -kauf-Passage . The name Hänsch Arena has been in effect since January 2014. The stadium is a pure football arena with no surrounding tartan track .

In 1969 a floodlight system was installed for the first time, but dismantled after a few years due to safety deficiencies. A new floodlight system was put into operation in October 1996. In 2015, the capacity was reduced from 16,610 seats to 13,815 seats in the course of the DFB Cup game against 1. FC Köln for safety reasons. In the winter of 2017/18, the north stand was demolished and rebuilt, reducing the total capacity to 13,696 seats. The main grandstand (new grandstand) and the back straight (old grandstand) offer the spectators 4,340 seats, 4,164 of which are covered. In order to meet the regulations of the 3rd league, turf heating was installed in July 2018 .

Fans

SVM mug with logo and lettering: I've been a football fan since I've known the club!

The fans of SV Meppen watch the club's home games on the south stand of the stadium. The most famous fan clubs include Meppen-INC , Die 13 , die Laxtener Jungs , Leftside Meppen and the Meppinias , the latter being made up entirely of women. The Meppen scene acts as the umbrella organization for the fan groups . The official fan shop is located in the stadium. The supporters of SV Meppen see VfL Osnabrück and VfB Oldenburg as their main rivals. The rivalry with Osnabrück arose in the second division era and is justified by the geographical proximity. After SV Meppen was promoted to the 3rd division, the rivalry was revived.

A year later, the Meppen runners-up behind Blau-Weiß Lohne , before the team was relegated in 1999 as the bottom of the table. SV Meppen provided 17 youth teams in the 2013/14 season, two of which were girls' teams. The A-, B- and C-Juniors as well as the B-Juniors belong to the youth performance center Emsland . The A-Juniors made it to the U-19 Bundesliga in 2014 . There they finished last and were relegated and a year later they were even passed through to the third-class Lower Saxony league, but then immediately rose again. The B-Juniors play in the second-rate Regionalliga Nord, while the C-Juniors became Lower Saxony champions in 2017 and thus made the leap into the first-class Regionalliga Nord. The B-Juniors were among the founding members of the B-Juniors-Bundesliga in 2013 and took part in the final round of the German B-Juniors Championship in 2017 , where they failed in the semi-finals at Bayern Munich .

Women's soccer

Main article: SV Meppen (women's football)

Since the 2011/12 season , the footballers of SV Victoria Gersten have been playing under the name SV Meppen. In 1993, the team made it to the then second-class Oberliga Nord , which was renamed Regionalliga Nord two years later . In 2002 the barley women became champions, but missed promotion to the Bundesliga . After the renewed championship two years later, the club waived the promotion round. Since then, the team has played in the 2nd Bundesliga, introduced in 2004.

In the 2019/20 season , which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , fourth place was enough for promotion to the Bundesliga, as two higher-placed second teams were not eligible for promotion.

particularities

SV Meppen versus FC Barcelona

Admission ticket SV Meppen - FC Barcelona

The game against FC Barcelona on August 3, 1982 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of SV Meppen's club is considered to be the match of the century for SV Meppen. In front of an estimated 22,000 spectators in Meppen's Hindenburg Stadium , the then 21-year-old Diego Maradona made his debut for FC Barcelona, to which the Argentine playmaker had switched after the 1982 World Cup for a record transfer fee of 7.3 million dollars. Meppen's coach Hans-Dieter Schmidt summed up: "He had to be escorted onto the field by police officers, then he grabbed a ball and began to dribble back and forth between the penalty area and the center line. Foot, thighs, head, neck - all sorts of tricks. A swarm of 100 fans followed him within a very short time. Whenever he walked in the opposite direction, an alley formed briefly. Maradona danced through and then the crowd hung back on his heels. An unbelievable picture. " Barcelona won the game 5-0. Goal scorers for Barcelona, coached by Udo Lattek , were Maradona, Allan Simonsen , Quini , Moran and Víctor Muñoz .

SV Meppen and Toni Schumacher

In 1988, SV Meppen unintentionally attracted attention when the goalkeeper of the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 , the former national goalkeeper Toni Schumacher , said: "I don't play in Meppen, I'd rather go to Turkey !" At the time, Meppen was a synonym for second class. When Schalke then had to go into the second division, Schumacher switched to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . The Meppener reacted to this statement with humor. On April 22, 1988, the local freight forwarder Többe sent a truck trailer with the label “SV Meppen - the football experience” right in front of Schumacher's front door in Hürth . He was not at home and heard about the action from his wife by phone. Toni Schumacher himself found the campaign “funny and sovereign”. In 2015 Toni Schumacher traveled to Meppen as Vice President of 1. FC Köln when the billy goats had to compete in the DFB Cup at SV Meppen.
