Career
society
At club level, Caligiuri played for Hamburger SV (1986/87), SV Meppen (1987–1989), Hansa Rostock (1990/91), SC Freiburg (1991/92), FC St. Pauli (1995 / 96), Columbus Crew (1996) and Los Angeles Galaxy (1997-2001).
For the 1990/91 season Caligiuri moved to Hansa Rostock. He was the first foreign professional in the club. In this last season in East German football, he won the NOFV championship with Rostock . As a result, the club had achieved a starting place for the 1st Bundesliga . This season he was also the last FDGB Cup winner. Caligiuri completed 22 games for FC Hansa; he did not succeed in a goal. After the season he was unable to agree on a Bundesliga contract with the club. He then left Rostock and went to SC Freiburg .
Caligiuri completed 15 appearances in the 1st Bundesliga for FC St. Pauli . In the 2nd Bundesliga he played 45 times (1 goal) for SV Meppen and 18 times for SC Freiburg. Originally, in 1986, the then manager of Hamburger SV, Felix Magath , after Caligiuri had become “Footballer of the Year” in the USA, directed him from the USA to Hamburg. But Caligiuri had no real chance at Hamburger SV under coach Ernst Happel and did not make a single game for him in the 1st Bundesliga.
National team
Caligiuri took part in two world championships. At the 1990 World Cup in Italy , he made all three games for the USA. However, the USA were eliminated in Italy after three defeats in the preliminary round. In the 1: 5 defeat against Czechoslovakia , Caligiuri marked one of the two goals scored by the USA at this tournament with the consolation goal .
At the 1994 World Cup in his own country, he was called back to the US squad by the Serbian coach of the USA, Bora Milutinović . After surviving the preliminary round, the USA were unlucky enough to be eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual world champions Brazil after a goal by Bebeto . Caligiuri was used in all four games of this World Cup.
Coaching career
Before the start of the fall 2001 season, Caligiuri took over the coaching of the men's and women's soccer team at California State Polytechnic University . He stayed there until the end of the 2008 season. In 2017 he took over Orange County FC, which plays in the fourth-rate National Premier Soccer League .
