Performing in tournaments

In the United States, a special form of indoor football had already developed in the 1970s , so it was no problem to be one of the first nations in futsal. In 1989 the team was invited to the first FIFA World Cup and made it to the semi-finals. In the second round, the North Americans defeated the eventual world champions Brazil 5: 3. Three years later in Hong Kong, the team reached the final. In the second round there was a draw against the Brazilians, but the USA lost 4-1 to the defending champions in the final. In 1996 they were eliminated in the preliminary round, and they didn't even qualify for the 2000 World Cup. In 2004 the fourth participation in the tournament followed, although they were eliminated without points in the intermediate round. The USA were able to qualify at the 2008 World Cup, but were eliminated in the preliminary round without a win. In 2012 and 2016 the qualification failed again.

The CONCACAF continental championships won two out of six events (1996, 2004). In 2000 and 2008 the tournament was finished in 3rd place; In 2016 the qualification was missed for the first time.
