Hosts and venues

Venues for the 1989 Futsal World Cup

The Netherlands has been selected to host the first FIFA- sponsored World Indoor Soccer World Cup . The Dutch football association KNVB celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1989, and the Netherlands, with around 100,000 active indoor footballers, was one of the strongholds of the still young sport.

The cities of Rotterdam , Arnhem , Amsterdam , 's-Hertogenbosch and Leeuwarden were chosen as the venues . There was traditionally a high level of interest in football at all five venues.

  • The Sportpaleis Ahoy ' in Rotterdam served as the venue for the opening matches of the tournament. Furthermore, six games of the intermediate round and the final round took place in the hall, which can hold up to 7,000 spectators.
  • In Arnhem, the Rijnhal served as the venue. Four preliminary round and six intermediate round games took place in the hall built in the 1970s. Up to 6,500 spectators could attend the games.
  • The Maaspoort sports center in 's-Hertogenbosch was the venue for six preliminary round matches. The hall, opened in 1982, offered space for up to 3,500 spectators.
  • In Amsterdam, six preliminary round games were played in the Sporthal Zuid in front of a maximum of 3,500 spectators.
  • The Frieslandhal in Leeuwarden was the venue for six preliminary round matches. The hall held up to 4,000 visitors.

Attendees

All 16 participating nations were invited by the organizers. In addition to the host Netherlands, five other teams from Europe took part, while South America provided three participants. Two teams each were invited from Africa, Asia and the CONCACAF zone, while Australia took part from Oceania.

For some nations, the 1989 World Cup remained the only World Cup participation to date (as of 2008) . Algeria, Denmark and Saudi Arabia did not continue their futsal teams after the World Cup, while Zimbabwe and Canada only registered a team for one of the following five World Cup qualifications.

The world champion

Top favorite Brazil had start problems in Group B at the beginning. Brazil lost 3-2 to Hungary sensationally. Only after the defeat did the Express get going, they beat Saudi Arabia 8-0 and Spain 4-1. In the second group stage they overran Paraguay 5-1 and won a 6-3 win over Argentina. Brazil only played for group victory against the USA , which also had two wins to date. Surprisingly, the Brazilians suffered their second defeat in the tournament, with a 5-3 victory the US team became group winners. In the semi-finals, the South Americans played against Belgium, who were able to beat the hosts in their group. After extra time it was 3: 3 against Belgium. Now the six-meter shoot-out had to decide, which the South Americans won 5-3. In the final, the hosts Netherlands met in front of 4,200 spectators. Benatti took the lead at the beginning for Brazil, the Dutch equalized through Loosveld. But in the 46th minute of the game Raul scored the 2-1 lead, which they no longer gave up. Brazil became the first futsal world champion.
