Performing in tournaments
At the invitation of FIFA , the Hungarian national team took part in the first Futsal World Cup in the Netherlands in 1989, where they were drawn into a group with Spain, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. With victories over Saudi Arabia and the eventual world champions Brazil as well as a narrow defeat against Spain, they reached the second round in second place. There it was enough to draw a draw against the Netherlands and Belgium, and a 1: 3 defeat in the last group game against the previously pointless Italians meant they missed the semifinals. Since then, Hungary has regularly participated in World Cup qualifications, but has always missed the World Cup finals.
After four unsuccessful attempts, the Hungarian national team qualified for a European Championship for the first time in 2005, but failed without winning a point in the preliminary round to Spain, Portugal and Italy. Five years later they hosted the European Championship finals, in a group of three with Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic they failed again early without winning a point.
