Since 2005 there has also been a preliminary round for new futsal nations, which precedes the qualifying tournaments. In the final round, the teams are currently divided into four groups of three. The first two in each group reach the quarter-finals. The four winners play in the semi-finals for participation in the finals. With one exception in 2003, the losers in the semi-finals play for third place.
