Futsal Asian Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Since 1999, the Asian Football Confederation has hosted the official Asian Futsal Championship for national teams (officially: AFC Futsal Championship ). The first final round was held in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia . The tournament was held annually from 1999 to 2008, then every two years. The tournament also serves as a qualifying tournament for the World Cup every four years .

history

When the world governing body FIFA hosted the first Futsal World Cup , Asia sent any two representatives, Saudi Arabia and Japan. For the next World Cup in 1992, however, there was a qualification with six teams at that time, and for the qualification for the 1996 World Cup, nine teams finally competed.

In 1999 it was decided to host an Asian championship. The first edition took place from March 5th to 10th, 1999 in Malaysia. The winner of the tournament was the Iranian team, which from this point onwards was able to secure all championships with the exception of 2006.

mode

The host of the final round is firmly qualified for the Asian Cup, and the 12 best-placed teams from last year's tournament also advance to the final round. The other four places will be played in a qualifying tournament.

In the final round, the nations are divided into four groups of four. The first two in each group reach the quarter-finals and play in a cross game for promotion to the final. There will also be a game for third place.

The mode at the finals changed several times.
