Santo Tirso is a municipality and city in northern Portugal that is very much influenced by viticulture. The community has a population of 14,072 (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Finds prove a prehistoric settlement. In particular, the excavations on Monte da Assunção, but also the excavated fortress villages from the Castro culture of Monte Padrão and Santa Margarida are worth mentioning. In the 2nd century BC Romans who arrived in BC took the villages and romanized them.
The current location goes back to the founding of a monastery by D. Unisco Godiniz in 978. In 1097, the future King D. Afonso Henriques gave the area of the monastery to Soeiro Mendes da Maia, before it came to the Benedictine monastery of Abbot D. Gaudemiro a year later. In 1833 the area included the parishes of Santo Tirso, São Miguel do Couto and Santa Cristina do Couto. After the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg all church orders were dissolved in 1834 and their goods were nationalized. One of the monastery buildings then became the provisional administrative seat of the newly created Santo Tirso district, which covered the previous area of the monastery property.
In the 1970s, many of the residents of Santo Tirso emigrated to Groß-Umstadt in southern Hesse , which still has a large Portuguese minority today.
In 1985 the previous small town ( Vila ) was elevated to a town ( Cidade ). Until 1998 Santo Tirso was one of the most populous districts in the country, until Trofa became independent through outsourcing.
