Saint-Péray wine region

The municipality of Saint-Péray gives its name to the wine-growing region of the same name with the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short). The 62 hectare area received this status on December 8, 1936 and is a privileged cru within the large appellation Côtes du Rhône . Only white wines are made from the Roussanne and Marsanne blanche grape varieties . When a cellar master from Champagne visited Saint-Péray in 1825 , he explained the production method of sparkling wine to interested winemakers . In 1829 the first bottles of Saint-Péray Mousseux were uncorked.

The sparkling wine now represents around 60% of the wine volume (around 2100 hectoliters / year) in the area; he is one of the best in France.

The yield restriction is generally 45 hectoliters / hectare. Wines that do not meet the conditions of this AOC may be marketed under the name Côtes du Rhône.

Famous lovers of Saint-Péray wines were Alphonse de Lamartine , Alphonse Daudet , Richard Wagner and Tsar Alexander II .
