history

In the Middle Ages, Boulieu was a fortified city in the province of Languedoc . The place was first mentioned in 1093 in a Latin chartular of the monastery of Saint-Saveur-en-Rue , where it is recorded that a certain Guigo d'Arnaldus left a vineyard and an associated estate of the Les Osches family to the prior of Boulieu.

In the 14th century the construction of a fortress was approved by liege Aymar de Roussillon . It was flanked by nine towers and had three gates. In addition, an Ursuline nunnery was inaugurated in 1635 .

The introduction of Protestantism in 1563, which had already found many supporters in Annonay, led to bloody clashes in the region, which are also known as the Cevennes Wars . The local temple was badly damaged on January 15, 1625 by the "dragons" of King Louis XIV . The wars of religion did not spare even the houses in the small suburbs. After the war, the population of the city fell sharply and the community developed more and more into an important stopover for mule drivers. The place was ruled by two consuls and their four advisors. The municipality's full name has been called Boulieu-lès-Annonay since 1900 .

Culture and sights

The medieval old town of Boulieu is fortified with a square protective wall and houses the remains of the old city wall, as well as seven round towers and a city gate of the old fortress. It also consists of antique houses, such as the Maison Girard , which are equipped with window sashes and doors from the Renaissance and attract attention from afar due to their ironwork and chiseled windows. Branched streets from the 16th century lead through the town center to the old fountain from 1650. The new one is at the end of the Rue du Puits-Nouveau .

Also worth seeing are the pharmacy tower and the community center, a building from the 17th century with lattice gates and preserved choir stalls . The community also has two castles; the ancient Château de Charlieux and the Château de Mars from the 19th century.

The church was founded in 1265 and expanded in 1655, the Francomtois- style steeple was not added until 1850. The Ursuline nunnery, which contains a statue of the Virgin Mary from the 16th century, can still be visited today. The 20th century statue of Madone du Colombier can also be seen near the city .
