Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay is a French commune with a population of 1,422 (as at 1st January 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Tournon-sur-Rhône and the Canton Annonay-1 (until 2015: Canton Annonay-Nord ). The inhabitants are called Saint-Marcelons .
geography
Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay is located about 25 kilometers southeast of Saint-Étienne in the Haut Vivarais and extends along the valleys of the Massif du Pilat , on the eastern side of the Massif Central . Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Saint-Julien-Molin-Molette in the north, Savas in the east and north-east, Boulieu-lès-Ardèche in the south, Burdignes in the west and south-west and Bourg-Argental in the west and north-west. The Deume River crosses the municipality.
history
Founded in the late 10th century (according to some sources 972), the place became important with the paper production from the beginning of the 19th century. Since the beginning of the 20th century - with the collapse of the paper industry - the place has primarily been a place of residence for those employed in industry and in the agricultural sector in the area.
