The continuous decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 19th century is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs. In addition, the mountain regions have depopulated almost everywhere in France in favor of the valleys.
economy
Traditionally the population lived from cattle breeding (milk, cheese) and a little agriculture. Since the 1970s, tourism has played an important role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of holiday homes ( gîtes ).
history
In 1164 a Commandery of the Templar Order was founded here by Count Aymar de Poitiers , which was taken over by the Order of Malta in 1312/3 and belonged to the Auvergnatian tongue . The building was destroyed by the English around 1338, but was subsequently rebuilt, only to be destroyed again by marauding gangs between 1428 and 1439. Rebuilt in 1472 by the Grand Prior Jean Cottet , buildings and lands changed hands several times during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598); They were nationalized during the French Revolution , but are now partly in private hands again.
Attractions

- The Protestant church ( temple ) was built around the middle of the 19th century.
- About two kilometers south of the village is Lac de Devesset , through which the river Eyrieux flows , and is one of the few surface waters in the Ardèche department.
