Mairie Cornas

Cornas is a French commune with 2,237 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardèche department , in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (until 2015 Rhône-Alpes ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Tournon-sur-Rhône and to the Rhône Crussol community association founded in 2014 . The inhabitants call themselves Cornassiens .

geography

Cornas is located about five kilometers northwest of Valence on the orographic right bank of the Rhône . The 8.33 km² large municipal area extends from the banks of the Rhône in the east far to the west into the hills of the Vivarais landscape , the eastern foothills of the Central Massif . The hill country is particularly wooded on the slopes, interrupted by vineyards and pastures. The municipality reaches the highest point of the terrain at 468 m above sea level on the western municipality boundary. The approx. 200 m wide Rhône forms the border to the Drôme department in the east , accompanied by the 300 m wide Isère , which is dammed up here and flows in parallel . The largest districts of the municipality of Cornas are La Résidence, Rouveure, La Mure, Bouyonnet, La Lègre and Les Arlettes . Cornas is bordered by the neighboring communities of Châteaubourg in the north, Bourg-lès-Valence in the east, Saint-Péray in the south and Saint-Romain-de-Lerps in the west.

Place name

The name Cornas is of Celtic origin and means scorched or burnt earth . This name well reflects the microclimatic conditions (warm and quite dry) combined with the granite and limestone floors. The community is known for the red wine made there .

Cornas wine

The Cornas municipality gives its name to the Cornas wine-growing region . This red wine from the northern Rhône wine-growing region has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short) since August 5, 1938 . The vineyards of over 40 wineries are located exclusively within the municipality of Cornas and cover 125 hectares. The steep slopes are partly terraced. In 2011, 4455 hl of wine were produced here.

In the municipality of Cornas there is a gas station, a hardware store, a sports shop, a clothing store, a bakery and several grocery stores. In addition, several farms are located in the community (cereal cultivation, vegetable cultivation, orchards).

Due to its close proximity to the large city of Valence , Cornas is well connected to the nationally important transport routes. The next motorway connection ( Autoroute A7 ) is only six kilometers away from Cornas.
